It's apparent that the animators did not do their homework, or if they did they took way too much artistic license. I can forgive the goblins, but the elves? They looked too much like the Grinch to me. And they used Andre Previn as the voice of the Elf King! An Austrian accent! Acckk! Pppthhh!

Smaug was very well done, especially the growl-ey voice of Richard Boone. I also thought Bilbo's voice (Orson Bean) appropriate. I am old enough to be familiar with both actors, and they were very well cast.

I didn't like the voice used for Smaug in the movie. We had just finished our own production of the Hobbit and we took some artistic license and played Smaug as female with eight of us doing it in chorus and the end result was much more impressive than the movie Smaug. Our Bilbo was a whole lot better too. But then... I'm probably just being biased in our favor...

I liked Smaug's voice in the animated Hobbit. Seemed very good for a dragon. Power, cunning, and malice all combined in one.

I also HATED the gollum, it was the worst thing i have ever seen. He looked liked an overgrown frog, and Tolkien said he was closely related to a hobbit.

I think the only way that Gollum could possibly look like a hobbit is if a hobbit decided to smoke a little too much pipeweed, try some mushrooms he found in the forest, take a hit of acid, dilate his eyes (not just his pupils), and then roll around in mud for the rest of the day.
In other words, you're right, he looked nothing like a hobbit.

I liked all three animated movies. They're pretty cheesy, but cool in their own way. I just couldn't figure out why Elrond looked normal and Thranduil and the Mirkwood elves looked like Gremlins(remember those horrid movies?). Also, the song I like is "Where there's a whip, there's a way" from ROTK.

No we didn't make a movie, it was a live theater production thing, although one of the parents did film it... (They got the "Molested" performance! )
We did six performances at the end of last july and it was really fun, we got a lot of audience. And yes, Beorn was in it although he sadly did not make it to the battle of five armies as the actress playing him was busy playing Thranduil at the time.

That's pretty funny!

I still like that song "where there's a whip, there's a way" from the Return of the King movie. I actually liked how the goblins looked, too. Even though they're fat...

Just thought I'd mention that I bought The Hobbit on DVD yesterday. Haven't gotten the chance to watch it again yet.

My mom just told me a story about she and my dad watching The Hobbit in theatres. My mom was complaining about her hate of fantasy and the characters' voices, and my dad coundn't standing seeing the book so "gruesomely misportrayed." So it became the only movie that either one of them has walked out on.

The animated Hobbit was NEVER shown in theatres. Ralph Bakshi's animated The Lord of the Rings was. Lots of people walked out on that one.

I own The Hobbit cartoon movie, I think that it's really good, of course it could be better, and there are parts that it changed from the book that I didn't like to much, but all in all it was really good, and worth the $ to buy.
