Well, I rechecked, and I'm pretty certain that Dumbledore used the Put-Outer first, then sat on the wall beside the cat, said something and turned to look at the cat, and then found McGonagall sitting there. Personally I don't mind if Spock gets the question... I'm a little short on ideas for a question myself... but I'd just like the record to be set straight, you know.

ok, I'll jump in. The *first* time she sees them she says, "I've never heard of them before...where do they come from?"

Later on (in her Daily Prophet article and thus later) she wrote: "highly dangerous crosses between manticores and fire crabs...." -there's more but that's the jist of it.
