Hey Mari! It's been pretty busy. School and work have kept me quite occupied. But at least school is starting to wind down now. How are things with you?

Welcome! And don't worry, quite a lot of us aren't native speakers. And being a native speaker doesn't automatically mean you can actually speak English...
I hope you'll enjoy your time here.

Mae govannen, everyone! (hope I said that right-it's been a long time!) I'm so happy to finally be back! I was home for a mere 10 days total this summer due to travel and classes at Stanford. Can't wait to catch up with you all!

I've been MIA for a while now! here's my update: my dear hubby Mark and I had our 3rd baby (after 3 miscarriages) last November. Her name is Honey Gianna and she is almost 9.5 mths now! She is doing really well My other daughter, Arianna was recently diagnosed with a chromosomal abnormality...an Xq27.3q28 duplication. This was quite a shock. She is doing ok though and will be receiving speech therapy here soon. It was a random mutation and Mark and I do NOT have this duplication thankfully. Alexander started first grade this year and is progressing nicely despite his Dyspraxia.
Our Ukrainian Catholic Mission actually has a priest now and we will be having Divine Liturgy regularly now....YEA! We hope that next year our family can actually transfer churches from Latin to Ukrainian and our kids will be chrismated and receive their first Eucharist. I canNOT wait!!!!! Anyhoo....that is about it...oh wait I did just start school for Massage Therapy....hoping that works out b/c I really need a good part time job that I like! I hop to be done in Dec of 2012 or May of 2013. Last edited by Arien the Maia : 08-28-2011 at 09:40 PM. |

Hey Arien. It's certainly been a while. Congrats on number 3
Could you explain a bit more about the chromosomal mutation thingy? What does that mean for your daughter?

well, from what I gather, basically part of 1 of her X chromosomes has some duplicated genes on it. The q27.3q28 region is the very bottom of the X chromosome. Q27.3 has the Fragile X gene located on it but we had that test done on her (it's a separate test) and she does NOT have Fragile X (YEA!). Q28 is often associated with speech issues. It's a very small micro-duplication. It has caused some slight physical features in her and we think is contributing to her low oral muscle tone/apraxia speech delay. Initially we thought nothing of her speech issue b/c Alexander also had speech problems but without the physical features....which is why we got her tested.
Although I think she will be OK b/c she has the other X chromosome to help out (only 1 is active in any given cell), any kids she has will stand a 50% chance of being affected. If she has a boy with the "bad" X then he could be severely affected. I really wanted to get her into a special speech preschool but our school system is making that really hard....she tested borderline on a lot of the tests they gave her yet they make it sound like she's doing wonderfully! very frustrating! |
