Yeah, maybe it'd be best if you stayed with the decorational ones..
Isn't the hand guard an essential part of the rapier? That's pretty much the idea, right? Quote:

Now why would I do that? That's boring, that is
Yeah. That it is. Um...I meant to mention...there's hooks on it as part of the hand guard...can't really explain, it's one of those visual things...but it works

Why? Public safety, of course
I thought the point of fencing was to stay far apart and avoid close-quarters combat... I mean, if his blade is close enough to the hilt that you can hook him, then isn't he also close enough to stab you? Doesn't seem like a very logical move |

Now why would I worry about that?
Um...there's some circumstances in which that would work...and it's rapier, not fencing foil; if you had a fencing foil you would indeed want to stay far from your opponent's blade, but rapier is a little different.

A fencing blade, a long sword, and a dagger.
I also came up with this idea for a sword and I think that it might really work Its a four foot long thing over all and ALMOST (but not quite) half of it is just handle. When I was messing around with the idea with a little staff I have, holding it like that gave me better speed and power |

Tessar, your idea sounds very interesting, but I don't think it would be very feasible if your opponent got in close. Also, if the hilt is approximately two feet long, then where does one place one's hands?

On the hilt?....
Well, you put one of your hands right up near the blade and the other one a bit further back so that there are a few inches between each hand. |

Intriguing. Have you tried that same idea with a longer blade? Just to see if the speed and control are still there?

Sword Website
I know a website where the swords are quite cheap and they have the LOTR sword replicas. I bought a sword from this site and it is awesome and they sharpen it it comes with a scabberd or sheath and you can get them custom made for cheap, you should check it out. And you can get them functional or cheap. I got a functional and I LOVE MY SWORD

Hummm.... I think a longer blade would make it even worse for combat... Dono though. I'll have to test it
With a longer blade though it would be easyer to trap it under a foot. But with a shorter blade my thought is you can just spin the handle around and knock them away. *shrug* But there is not really a way I COULD test that so oh well *edited* But then again a logner blade might make the speed/power better. It would be harder to get it ready again though I think. Last edited by Tessar : 08-31-2002 at 03:39 PM. |

Thanks, Galendhol! That's a great site, definitely! I entered to win a sword...

I don't think the length of the blade would do much to effect the functionality of the sword, except increase its reach. The speed would probably stay *about* the same if the balance point is at the right spot. Also, added power won't really do much good, unless you're using the blade for cutting. Even then, some of the well-made one-handed swords are just as good or better.
Then again, the only way to really know the functionality of a sword is to experiment. |

Yeah . . . you say longer or shorter isn't an important bit, but approximately how long should a sword be in relation to the person using it? I need to know how long I should cut my blade to be. Any suggestions? I'm 5'3".
What sorts of metal are typically used for swords? Once I actually finish my knife, which is sorta a practice run, I may finally get around to making a sword . . . it's going to be aluminum, cause the guy at the shop said I wouldn't need to heat that up to hammer it, but somehow i get the idea that that's not really sword material. What is? Haha! I made myself some bows and arrows . . . . out of twigs and twine. They don't shoot that great, but they're better than my last batch. (hey, Elenka, if you want one, come and claim one)

I don't think the length of the blade has to be proportional to a person's height.. I guess just go for what handles best. A rough estimate would be maybe 2 feet, give or take a couple inches.
The best metal for swords is steel. I think aluminum is used for stage swords, which require light but thick blades. For more information, visit SFI. Last edited by Mirahzi : 09-01-2002 at 06:02 AM. |

Yes, a little like that but I would think that you would use it very little staff wise.

This is such a cool thread! I am very jealous of all you that have swords...though of course very impressed too because I know nothing about them. My grandparents have a lot of swords and knives, all Oriental, though, daggers from Pakistan and those long what-do-you-call-thems, oh, kriss, I think is the word.
