Harry Potter is a LOTR wannabe. It's obvious that great literary masterpeices can't be doubled. (I'm a writer, well, hope to be some day) It is a great possibility that Rowling derives the inspration for her books from tolkein's masterpiece, I mean, look at the way she writes her name: J.K. Rowling (or something like that)
doen't it resemble: J.R.R. Tolkien????

It's a conspiracy I tell you! (he he)

Aragon is older than Lord of the Rings; it was a region in Middle-Ages Spain, I think.

Oy- you want to see a ripoff of Lord of The Rings? Look at The Wheel of Time!

Never heard of that...

Ech, I hate the Wheel of Time. People revere it because it puts women more in the story. Well, damn them, I say, and as a woman I think that history is history and if you want to write about something close to the middle-ages, women shouldn't have a big role in the story!

Realistic fantasy!

I mean, it's not that small anyway, look at Eowyn!

Sword of Shannara was the first of the Shannara books written. They are very good books, and quite original (Except that the first one has very many plot similarities to LOTR).

Heh, I'd rather reread Lord of The Rings than read some other fantasy...

Hmm, very good point... Either re-read LOTR, or write your own.

But I still like an occasional change.

I'm doing both. Rereading LoTR and writing my own fantasy. However it's come to a grinding halt at the third chapter.

CHANGE IS BAD.

I rather to try new books. But until now, none of them was better then LOTR. It's just better to read new books then read the same book all the time, even if it's a very good one.

I don't like to read obscure fantasy. I'd rather read something great and wonderful with a large community rather than accidentally pick up something horrible where two people like it and hate me for not liking it.

I think my logic is askew again...

There's plenty of mainstream fantasy with huge followings. Eddings, Brooks, Lewis..and of course the DND fanfics.

Influence, even imitation, isn't rightly called stealing. There are many fantasy authors who lift ideas, even creatures, out of each other's books. The point of good writing isn't to make up your own outlandish creatures. The point is to write well about them.
Exactly!

I agree with GW, there are many good other books besides Tolkien. Many good other books.

Yes, but Tolkien tops 'em all. And I'd rather not get into something else, I might get hooked and forget about Tolkien altogether!

Well we all know that Tolkien was one of the first fantasy writers, and undisputredly the best. So of course almost all other fantasy writer will use him as a role model. In other words I like to say, Tolkien is the fantasy god.
I don't think that anybody really copied his ideas the way most people think (not Wheel of Time). But there is this one ridiculous anime with the true exactly exact same story line, and a dwarf named Gim.

After reading LOTR 50 times I'm sure you would rather reading an other book.

No books will ever equal LOTR and the Sil, because Tolkien worked on them all his life, and anything written in a year or two won't be a tenth as good.

In HP, Dumbledore is one of the teacher's names and it's what bees are called in ME.
