I like the aria in shawshank redemption that the Tim Robbins guy is listening to. I know the aria is from a mozart opera, I just cant think of which one.

I believe that is Sull'aria ... Ricevete, O Padroncina, Queste Rose from The Marriage of Figaro.
And what a good movie, I might add!

That would be a hard one to call. How about a favorite adagio? I'll go with Beethoven's 3rd on that.

Sadly, the War Requiem is one of the pieces missing from my collection. I do love Britten and have sung the beautiful Misericordia. Which performance do you have? Do you recommend it?

I have the Robert Shaw(not the actor) conducting recording. I strongly recomment that ine.
Also If you are interested in getting a Different Mozart's requiem recording,I warn against the Herbert von Karajan version. Although he is an excellant conductor, his interpretation of mozart's requiem stinks. The Sir Colin Davis recording is excellant though, and the Helmuth Rilling isnt bad either. Look for Leos Janacek's glagolitic mass, with Riccardo Chailly conducting. Someone know where i can get Dvorak's Requiem?(oh! didnt know it existed did ya?)

An excellent suggestion! Shaw, that is. His choral ideas always surprise and delight me. Atlanta was lucky to have him. It's too bad you weren't born a few years earlier, eh? This is a great idea. I'll move it to the top of my wish list.

I'll look for them at the library. But I think I'm probably missing the "R" in Romantic, if anything. I avoid a lot of the mid-19th century. I usually prefer a touch of restraint. But I haven't heard the work so I won't assume it to be as excessive as much of the work of his contempraries. (On the other hand I love opera. Isn't that strange?)

Lol, The 'R' in Romantic. Sorry.
Yes you will love his stuff. Are you someone who prefers classical to romantic? Hey, you should hear Haydn's 'mass in a time of war'. Britten's war requiem was inspired by it.

Actually, yes. And I prefer modern, medieval, and renaisance to romantic, too.
But today I am succumbing to a certain romanticism because we lost a great tenor. Franco Corelli passed away last night. He was 82 I bought two recordings that day my mother took me to the record store to buy my first albums. One was Toscanini conducting La Boheme and the other was a collection of arias and songs sung by Franco Corelli. That was about 35 years ago. So I'll be listening to him tonight when I get home.

Oh how sad. I've never heard of him though.
My parents are shocked and relieved that I like classical music instead of anything else. However, my liking opera gave them a positive shock.

Actually, I was going to listen to Franco Corelli last night but instead I went for Beethoven's 9th. I just moved and my wife and I finally unpacked the record player. Well, I have a tradition that I have to play The 9th first in a new place.
So I'm listening to Franco today.

Hi Hasty Ent
I've never listened any Heitor Villa-lobos. Can you give me some pointers? I've been curious about that composer for a while now...
