Nice one Red Sox! What's that... the first victory in 86 years? This random factoid provided to you by my boyfriend, a baseball nut. (That's like when the BC Liberals formed the government! )

I'm not really a baseball fan, but I like it when underdogs win at any sport. Yay Red Sox!

I think even Bill Buckner can be absolved now. I'm glad this thread is around to show my support for them for at least the last two years so I can't be accused of jumping on the bandwagon like so many will do.

so what are peoples thoughts on these latest steroid use revelations to come to light? Jason Giambi admits to using them for years. And now its directly indicated Barry Bonds only the best player in baseball the past decade and one of the greatest of all time (and gee what a shock!). Baseball is a complete joke when it comes to cracking down on steriod use. They truly dont care. Did you know they give players FIVE chances before they actually start penalizing them?! And theres no formal testing system in place. Senator McCain today said he was going to impose some penalties on baseball players through legislation if baseball didnt get its act together and do it itself. EVERY other major sport at least has some kind of system in place to check for and penalize players that abuse steroids. Baseball has refused to for years. Because they know it gives them more players who can hit big home runs and THAT brings fans into the stadiums.

I am a dedicated baseball nut. In our town we have a triple A team that is continually gutted by the Padres for relief pitchers, starters, and home run hitters.
The game changed many years ago when stadiums were built with fences close enough to encourage homers. Every since The House That Ruth Built, the emphasis was taken away from running and slap hitting. In the minds of the fans the home run is king. I remember growing up idolizing Mickey Mantle. And in the last few years, the home run records have been shattered by steroid-using cheaters. But I think baseball is a lot more than home run records. I do not think Barry Bonds is the greatest living player. I think Ichiro Suzuki is the greatest. My love of baseball, fortunately, isn't based on other fans' opinions, but I do not like that fact that the attitude of most fans -- and you can tell it just by looking down the list of players on the all-star team who take steroids -- is harming the game. If the fans continue to vote steroid users onto the all-star team, then MLB has to make them ineligible. I want Rudy Giuliani to take over the commissioner's job and, even though I have never liked his politics, I know he will clean up baseball. Bud Selig is one of the problems and the player's union is the other. We need a real commissioner. |
