Could it be the forging of the Rings of Power? The elves of Eregion made them (except the One Ring) with some help from Sauron, who later betrayed them.

I didn't see that he mentioned Sauron and the Rings of Power anywhere, but maybe he did. But how can I be more specific? Those jewel-smiths of Eregion were called the MÃ*rdain, they were followers of Celebrimbor, grandson of Feanor... Sauron came to them in disguise and from him the learned a lot and made the Rings of Power. Sauron forged secretly his One Ruling Ring, but the elves had also made their Three Elven Rings which opposed Sauron's power. When Sauron found out that, he became very angry and destroyed the land of Eregion and killed Celebrimbor.

Now am I talking about the right thing at all?
