To answer your question, the King of Gondolin once wore it. As to your previous question, aren't we supposed to be asking questions that have answers in the regular version of the Hobbit?

The previous question is a matter of meaning of the phrase. You don't need a special version to answer it.

“What does the term american refers to” asked the boy, and the wise man answered: “Lets look at the dictionary then.” As an adjective American is: 1. Of or relating to the United States of America or its people, language, or culture. 2. Of or relating to North or South America, the West Indies, or the Western Hemisphere. As a noun American is: A native or inhabitant of America. A citizen of the United States. Then the boy asked, “What is America then?”, and the wise man looked at the dictionary again: 1. The United States. 2. also the A·mer·i·cas. The landmasses and islands of North America, Central America, and South America. Confused, the boy asked, “Does the term american refers solely to a us citizen or to any person in North, Central or South America?” The wise man replied: “What do you think?”, and the boy answered: “It is clear to me that while the term american is used to refers to us citizens, one can also use it to refer to any person who is from that continent too,” the boy thought for a while and asked the wise man, “Am I right?”, and he replied: “But of course.” The boy wondered, why is it that some people refuse to acknowledge the fact that the term american refers not only to US citizens but to anyone of the American continent?, but then sadly, the boy understood, that it is the calamity of ignorance. |

Maedhros,
Gotta agree with jsandecker about that prior question: none of my editions of "The Hobbit" spell out who that king was. Your own answer indicates that one would need the annotated edition. After reading the LOTR books, I always assumed it referred to the no-longer existent Kings of Arnor / Arthedain... even Rhudaur - since that's the territory where this happened (as opposed to the note you cite from the annotated edition). We'll let you get away with THAT one! Just don't do it again! - OK? Now - does jsandecker go next? Was that the answer you (Maedhros, again) wanted for the other? Looks like he gave it first. PS - if you look back a few weeks, you'll see that I was also guilty of asking a question not found in the book... asked without checking! So... join my little club! |

Okay. Let's see how long it takes for someone to get this.
How many wood-elves were mentioned by name or job when Bilbo and the dwarves were in the elves' "mansion?" ( i don't know if it is a castle or not. )

I can think of three: the king, the butler (?) and the captain of the guard.

Valandil, I suggest you'll ask a question, no matter if you're right or wrong. (I got my 'Hobbit' back! )

OK - but I may have to check my own book to verify this one (I THINK I know it though):
Who was the first dwarf to show up at Bilbo's door for the "unexpected party?" |

That's who I was thinking. Should we wait until I get home to check it? Or do you want to check yourself - then ask a question if you were right (in which case, maybe wait 3 hours to post the right answer if you were wrong... agreed?)???

Ok - so I checked in the book, and it was Dwalin (sp.)...
I agree - I won't ask a question 'till tomorrow (because more 3 hours I will be asleep) |

You might as well ask, since you went ahead and posted the right answer (he was the other one I thought of... and I wasn't SURE - I knew they were the first two - and Balin was generally nicest to Bilbo).
OR - I could ask another? |

Sorry 'bout that. I wasn't able to get to the computer for a couple of days. I think the answer to that is Bombur.

After raiding the troll's cave, what did the dwarves get to eat for breakfast?
