Merc, I've sung some John Rutter, it's amazing! Really weird at points, but very effective. One especially is Hymn to the Creator of Light, words by Lancelot Andrews. Tavener also does that kind of thing. I enjoyed The Lamb.

The church just paid him mucho daniero (?) anyway, lots o' $ to come for a week or so, practice/direct their really really good choir, and then give a concert.

Personally i am converting to wicca or witchcraft. Unlike most people belive, wicca is a very peaceful, harmonious and balanced way of thinking and life which promotes oneness with the divine and all which exists. Also unlike most people belive, witches don't worship saten, saten is a christian creation and they can keep him. I don't belive we need a figure of ultiment damnation to scare us into doing the right thing, we can do that of our own free will.

Random aside... now for a little hunour.
I grew up in a mixed religion household. It can be hard sometimes. My mother was an agnostic and my father was an athiest. I remember the arguments - "There is no God." "There might be." Merc's post reminded me of that.

An Anglican bishop has criticised the hymn "I vow to thee my country" because he thinks it is nationalistic and therefore inappropriate for Christians to sing.

However, regardless of whether he's right or wrong about this particular hymn (though I think he's wrong, wrong, wrong) do you think Christianity and patriotism are incompatible? the desire for meaning and 'something greater' is very strong among humanity, and many may look to patriotism is something more tangible in today's world
the more things change, the more they stay the same i do agree that they should be able to sing whatever they want, however... nobody really pays attention to the words anyway, i'm sure
