Oh man! I think I was JUST reading this yesterday...
March 25, 2841??? The info is actually not in "The Hobbit" though (or is it - I read it either in Appendix A or in "People of ME") - is that within the rules? |

Oh - and that made it 100 years before the unexpected party... like the previous (or next) Tuesday or something.

Glad I found such a good one. Actually, it is in the book, and you're close.

Then I'll just outright guess... April 15, 2841?
I re-checked what I had read (after my first try) - and found the date that had struck me was March 25, 2941 - the date when Gandalf met Thorin (either on the road on in Bree) when they were both traveling east. |

Valandil is right. It was exactly 100 years before the unexpected party.

The Hobbit doesn't say the year, but you are very close for the day. I'll give it to you. The answer given by the Hobbit is "And Thrain your father went away on the twenty-first of April, a hundred years ago last Thursday, and has never been seen by you since-" It's said by Gandalf during the Unexpected Party. Your turn, Valandil.

OK thanks... I guess I was within a week. Why'd I pick tax day? And yes - you have to go to LOTR appendices to get the year...
Now I have two... but along similar lines to the last one: "EXACTLY how long was Bilbo away on his 'adventure'?" |

not exactly... I guess I'm being stricter on you than "jsandecker" was on me (sorry) - but let's see if you or someone can nail it exactly...

Arghhhh! I was mistaken... I checked and there is no EXACT time given for the trip. Somehow I had THOUGHT it was exactly one year + one day... but I was wrong, since there's the mention of an April departure - and we find out Bilbo and Gandalf are still traveling back in June - so it sounds like it's somewhere around 14 months or so.
I guess my memory is getting foggy - with the advance of age and all... So - sorry! My apologies to all... shall I banish myself from the trivia contest for awhile? Re-read the book before I play again? Radagast... do you want the next question? You were in the ballpark anyway. |

OK! I'll try again: What was Bilbo doing on his 51st birthday? |

Oops I did it again!
I've GOT to stop posting questions from my memory. I always answer that way - but I've been asking that way and keep coming up with bad questions!
I was pretty certain Bilbo was riding a barrel down the river on his 51st birthday. However, after asking it - and nobody answering, I decided to check the book. I looked and looked and didn't find it. I thought maybe it was before or after (remembered some mention about his b-day!) and STILL didn't find it! Turns out I remembered right, but had the wrong source. In the first chapter of FOTR, while giving his b-day speech, Bilbo mentions that he arrived at Esgaroth on his 51st birthday. So, it was a bad question because it wasn't in "The Hobbit" So... I withdraw the question and open the table for somebody else to ask one... Sorry folks! |

Hmm, I don't have my book, but here's a question
What is the first thing Bilbo stole in his role as a thief?

Bilbo didn't actually get the wallet... Does the ring count? I don't have my book with me, but i think it's either the ring or the food he stole in the elves' castle.

Hmm... seems to be a debate.
When I asked the question I was thinking of the cup he stole from Smaug, but that is incorrect. Bilbo didn't actually succeed in stealing the wallet and I agree with Lizra that Bilbo FOUND the ring . I think the taking of food from the elves is correct, so take it away jsandecker.

Thanks, Elvengirl. Let's see... Here we go. This should be an easy one. Sorry, I don't have my book with me. Why did Smaug think that Bilbo called himself "Barrel-rider?"

He thought Bilbo rode a pony named Barrel?
