Look, I know this is a friendly place, but I'd stow the ego, and fast buddy.

The Encyclopedia of Arda contains a lot of information that is conjectural or plain hypocryphal, and your dependence on it bellies what YOU understand.

Oh, and that was nice that you copied the text from that page word for word. Surely someone as gifted as yourself is capable of writing their own answer.

As for the substance of your answer: there are certain dubieties of the english language that do in fact make the answer less "logical and literal" than you may seem. Does a sculptor make a statue, or does the chisel? The uncertainty in answering that question stems from the subjective interpretation of the question. In the case of your question, the word "what" does not exclude the possibility of a person being the answer, as I'm sure someone as smart as you is well aware. Now, your answer is right, but it is by no mean the exclusive answer. On top of that, the fact remains that a tool does nothing without a guiding influence of some sort. While a car propels people from one place to another, a car doesn't drive, a person does. In the same way, the pen you refer to may have performed the interactions that resulted in moon letters, but these were guided by the hands of the dwarves. Your subjective interpretation of the question is, in my humble opinion, a rather poor one when considering this; even if it is not entirely inaccurate.

Gentlemen! Temper temper!
Spock....I did a brief check in the chapter "A Journey in the Dark" and did not find the silver pens mentioned. (I do remember this being mentioned in The Hobbit though. ) If I am missing it, could you direct me to the passage please? The rules in the first post do request that the answers must be found in The Fellowship of the Ring.....

Ultimate Joe, I think Spock was teasing you, and surely he meant it goodnaturedly! Please don't be offended!

Give UJ a break, he's been spending "quality time" with JD in another thread.

Spock, can the answer be found in LotR? I searched for it and didn't find any mention of silver pens.

UJ - although I do believe you're right, I think you could have been more... eh, friendly, when saying that... I don't get it, what made you so angry?

So who asks the next question?

..RGB, I'd asked V. to post the next question in order to facilitate things but as he's busy now, perhaps you'd be kind enough to.

Thanks to those who know me a bit longer and my method of posting for their understanding.
Thanks too, Lizra ,for correctly pointing out to me that my memory skipped and remembered from the Hobbit....this is old news to some, but all my books are still packed awaiting the day when we move....which should have been last month and now looks like it will be next month....oy veh!

Cirdan, thanks for your attempt to cool the flames aimed at me...I don't ever remember encountering such animosity on this board.

Look, it's not like I want to lynch the guy or anything, I just thought the attitude was way over the top. Condascension is my major pet peeve and he is still engaged in it.

Yes. New question then... What does Frodo dream when sleeping during a snow storm in Caradhras?

A greenstone left from Glorfindel. (The exact name of the gem eludes me. It's a real stone though.)

Yes to both of you! Let's see if UJ can stump us!
(I sure would like a beryl! I imagine it looking like large, round, shimmering peridot. )

How many people in the LoTR narrative is Aragorn related to (before marriage)?
