I don't call it Härskarringen, I've always said Sagan om Ringen. Someone who knows, what's the difference?
I understand if he disliked it; it doesn't mean the same thing at all!

A few errors in Ohlberk's translation, according to this site: Ford of Bruinen - Björnavad (Bear's crossing, I think) Archet - Gamleby (Old village) Mountains of Lune (Ered Luin) - Månbergen (moon-mountains) Gladden Fields - Ljusa slätterna (bright plains) And what Tolkien said on the subject (among other things): Quote:

This is also a very good site about the Swedish translation (In Swedish) I find the whole thing very amusing; Tolkien seems to have really disliked Åke Ohlmarks.
This is one of my favourite bits from that site: Quote:

Hmmm, I know that Tolkien liked the German translation. I think he also worked together with the woman who translated it.
A lot of the German names were suggestions of Tolkien himself. He wanted the Elf to be called "ELBEN" as he couldn't do that in English (someone said, that the English speaking people were not able to pronounce it ...).

Thanks for the translation of the swedish and finnish title, Nerdanel and Falagar. It would seem that Dutch isn't the only language where the title deviates a little from the English one. There goes my observation.
I remembered an old thread about translating the names of characters in other languages... wait, I'll dig it up. Translation of names Hm, I thought it was longer....

What do you think about this: (Finnish) Klonkku=Gollum Keskimaa=Middle Earth (a direct translation) örkki=orc Haltiat=Elves ..and a lot more. If you'd hear those Finnish names, would you recognice them then? Didn't thinks so either.

And suddenly the Mir space station makes sense!
I will refrain from making the cheap joke about Swedes wanting that looker Fred, as it would lower the tone of the post.

It's FRIEDE in German. Just a little mistake.

Is it true that in Swiss German there's a corruption of 'Peace Corner', Friede Ecke, that comes out as Fried Eggs?

Åke Ohlmarks translated quite freely, but many things have been changed in later editions of the Swedish version of LotR. Like the thing about Legolas's kids and the feathery soles of the hobbits, those things have been corrected.
This fall, a completely new Swedish translation of LotR is due to appear. The translators are going to be as true to Tolkien as possible.

I think they ( Jon) mean that when the Swiss Germans pronounce 'Peace corner' auf Deutsch it sounds like 'Fried eggs' to others.

Because when I tried to pronounce it in Swiss German (yah, in thought I am able to do so) it sounds quite similar to "Fried eggs". Friedensecke.

Thanx Layla and Linny
It was just something vague in my mind from something mum said, she used to work der Schweiz (can't spell it in English...). I wasn't sure if she meant that it sounded like it or if she'd seen it on a sign writted as 'Fried Eggs'.
