Even if it is an illusion, you can't keep yourself from hurting from it if it happens to you.

You can't trigger the hormones/chemicals that cause the reaction to happen (at least not conciously), and you can't keep it from happening either.

I think those who are in love are no less than madmen, for how else can you describe one who is in love? The lengths people who are in love go to can often make people wonder what's possessing them.
On another philosophical note, love is a bit like (at least, my vision of) God. Something which you can't see, but which you feel. And when you've got it it empowers you, but when you feel like you're without it, you become weakened.
An agreed upon state of mind.

Thank you, though you may not want to say that after I tell you that you're correct in addressing me in the plural because it's the voices in my head which tell me such things.
But anyways, I know that love can probably be explained by hormones and pheromones (is that how you spell it?), but nonetheless we do become like madmen and do things we wouldn't normally do.
And just like God, it shows up at the exact moment you're not looking for it.

The hard thing is finding out if the other person feels the same way. Really, it is!

It's excrutiatingly painful to be sitting right next to the person you're pining for, and to be listening to him ask you for romantic advice. ARG!!! Why do I do this to myself? Stupid chemicals I've gotten a little better though. It's taken me awhile to convince myself that it is more than likely that anything I feel while I'm still a teenager is NOT (romantic) love.

I've always found the best way to discover if a guy feels the same way about me is to ASK HIM! Sheesh, why be coy about it when you can be honest?

There shall no one come to harm thee,
Naught shall ever break thy rest;
Sleep, my darling babe, in quiet,
Sleep on mother’s gentle breast.

Sleep serenely, baby, slumber,
Lovely baby, gently sleep;
Tell me wherefore art thou smiling,
Smiling sweetly in thy sleep?
Do the angels smile in heaven
When thy happy smile they see?
Dost thou on them smile while slumb’ring
On my bosom peacefully.

I think some people just have an innate fear of that. I believe there have actually been some studies which have shown that shyness can be genetic. So all you shy people out there, you can stop blaming yourselves.
There's also doubt which centers around it all. If you think there's a possibility that the person wouldn't like you, you'll most likely choose the path of fawning rather than flat out asking them and having to face a negative outcome. (sorry, I'm being a psychologist right now). Humans have a tendency to move towards favorable and likeable situations while moving away from painful or negative situations.
Granted there are those who have overcome this and slap fear in the face, but for the most part it's perfectly natural to not be able to say a word to the one you love.
I must say that I still believe love exists in high school, but what's happening is that it's now becoming cool for guys to be the outgoing ones who party and have several girlfriends, and the girls to be dumping them for someone they think is better. So all the few who think that the love they feel for a person is genuine begin to doubt themselves, believe (or want to believe) that they're like everyone else and so think that the love they feel is actually just a fleeting thing.
I think I need to go to the Venting thread for this one.

Like I've said before, I believe love in high school is plenty possible, but likely? No, especially not for me. I can't see myself married within the next five years, but who knows?

The strange thing is, while I can't bring myself to tell someone I have romantic interest in him, I am NOT shy, and usually don't have trouble talking casually with him, and luckily it is physically impossible for me to blush. It helps (and hurts...) that I tend to get 'crushes' on people I've been friends with for awhile.

I did let it be known to someone once, and it hurt me horribly. I still wince when I think about it today. The rejection wasn't even harsh, not at all. In fact, I would now consider him to be one of my best friends. I don't like making myself hurt anymore than I already have to, and I don't feel like ruining friendships by revealing romantic feelings, since I'm positive they're not requited.

edit: I've realized that I tend to fawn over my crushes, but I also fawn over my friends, so it's not so noticeable.

^wisewizard.

I myself, have noticed shy people have a low self esteem, and guess what? Studies show that is true, who is right?

Ummmm...let me get this right. You say that shy people have a low self-esteem, and because studies have shown that this is true it's impossible that shyness is genetic? I believe something is flawed in your logic my friend. Besides, there are several other things besides shyness which contribute to low self esteem.
Starr, you're a great example. You tells us you are NOT shy and yet it's obvious that you do have doubts and low self-esteem when it comes to romantic reltionships.
But as for advice for you, Starr, I'm afraid that I can offer no counsel. You've already set up internal barriers which sound like they're pretty hard to break down, so I'm not going to try.
Besides, I'm trying to convince my friend (the one I explained about before) that even though the girl he liked only wants to be friends, that's no reason to keep being paranoid about her and giving up on the entire friendship because of doubts which have no grounds.

I don't think it's strictly about shyness.

I mean, I have no trouble being a complete flirt and charmer around girls, as long as I'm not interested in them.

Obviously something's wrong there.

Love? Its a funny thing to discuss really. Love works on so many different plains. I love my parents and my family, that's one kind of love. I love my best friend dearly, she's like my sister who's always there and we seem to know eachother's thoughts but Romantic love- Never been there and don't think I'll ever go. I suppose you could say I'm too young to be worrying- still in school, not yet away from the nest, whole life ahead of me etc. Besides I'm too choosy. Growing up with fairytales has left me wanting my handsome prince but how many knights in shining armour or Legolas Greenleafs do you know in London? Am I too picky or do you think if I look hard enough he'll turn up? Arghh such a strange world is that of the heart! Mx

Wisewizard, if you were so logic and wise yourself you would notice that that statement wasn't a definitive (?) statement, I asked which one of those studies was correct, MAYBE if you pulled your head out of your...er...lower body cavaty, you would have noticed this.

Love is like oxygen.
Love is a many-splendoured thing.
Love lifts us up where we belong.
All you need is love
