The World Cup

Germany, 2006.

31 of the best teams (and the USA) (just kidding guys! )

gather for the largest, most watched most gripping festival on any global scale ever seen.

England expects. A sea of red and white flags of St george festoon England and wherever the faithful gather around the world.

Unusually there is, beyond hope, some real optimism that this maybe our time!

Witness a country literally go Mad and come to a stop if we do!

reserved? Hah!!!

Who you guys wanna win? Thoughts? Hopes? dreams?

Ha ha! I was JUST about to start this thread and scold you european/south american types for letting an american beat you to the punch on the biggest sporting event on earth.

Should be a fun time as always. I say look for the Dutch in an upset.

I was going to start this thread earlier (I think I started the last World Cup one) but I couldn't stand the thought of more people talking about Wayne Rooney's foot

My top three teams:

1. USA - duh.
2. England - I was in England during the Euro Cup in '04 and I was impressed by all the patriotism and even the coverage on the front page of newspapers. It was unlike anything I've ever seen. I've got a St. George's flag on my wall.
3. The Dutch - I remember pulling for them back in 1998 because I liked their orange uniforms. Plus, they were really nice to me and my family when I had my emergency landing in Amsterdam. I like the Dutch people.

Brazil will dominate and defend their title!

But I kinda think and hope England will go far in this tournament and might even win the world cup if Brazil doesn't make it all the way (which they will, since they play so beautifully).

Hope Sweden does well too!

Brazil will win it IMO. Beat Argentina in the final. I've got a feeling that the Czech's will do quite well.

There is a predictor on the BBC website where you can put in your predicted results. It's here.

You know, Americans do know how to play soccer. I'm sure they deserve their 5th ranked spot. It's just that it doesn't get televised as much as some other sports. Canadians know something about soccer too, in fact we are pretty good. Not making the World Cup good, but good.

I want Ghana to do well in their pool. At least to win one game. It would be awesome if they were to win, but I don't think that's going to be happening.

Ghana has some tough match-ups:
12 Jun ITA : GHA 21:00
17 Jun CZE : GHA 18:00
22 Jun GHA : USA 16:00

These times are local. Does that mean German time? Is that GMT+2?

Last time around I was cheering for Germany - my parents and I actually got up at 4am to watch it! I thought they played excellently even though Brazil still beat them.

You know, this World Cup I'm having a hard time choosing who to cheer for. Germany again (they still have Oliver Khan! <3)? England (I like this team and I think they really have a chance!)? Ghana (I would love to see an African team win, and I tend to cheer for the underdogs too)? Trinidad and Tobago (they are just awesome)? Sweden (jag älskar Sverige!)? Brazil?

I like the way Brazil plays soccer even though I don't usually cheer for the top dog. Something like 8 of 10 games on European soil has been won by European teams. If anyone can beat those odds, Brazil can.

So, I heard that it's injured, but maybe he'll be able to play and y'know he'd be a great asset for England they might even win this year!

Just buggin you Sunny!

Very unlikely. It seems like the rank of FIFA is determined by all wins and loses, not only of world cups and such - meaning that the US plays usually against other Noth American teams... which generally suck except Mexico maybe. Therefore it has a good score, relatively.

GMT+1 I think.

Quite sad for Sweden really.. but you can still get to the "Round of 16" (dunno how to say it in English)... and Sweden is never good at the first game anyway.

Me... I must say I'm more against Brazil this time than supporting any specific team. Don't like Germany either... I think I'll like Italy or England or Argentina to win, or more preferably some new team like Holland or Portugal.

Sweden will still qualify probably. I wouldn't be surprised if they beat England. I would be surprised if T&T beat England...

Radagast, it tends to be called the "last 16". With the other knock out matches it's called the "second round" or the "knock-out phase". We have plenty of silly words
