When Gandalf first went into Moria, who was he looking for?

Alas, i cant find the quotation. Its not in the council of elrond, nor is it mentioned in the tale of years.

No, wasn't it in the Green Hill Country, on the way to Woody End from Hobbiton?

Methinks that a Black Rider came round the corner of the road and stopped near where the hobbits lay hid. It was actually only Frodo who initially got in the tree with Sam by him, if i remember rightly.

The tree meal was preceded by the first sighting of a sniffing Black Rider. After he passed, the hobbits kept "a stones throw to the left of the road" and as the sun went down, they came upon the huge hollow tree, still alive at the edges. The hobbits entered by a "great crack" on the side of the tree opposite the road, and sat "upon a floor of old leaves and decayed wood", eating their meal.
Your turn Durin!
