Ahh. So you equate phoniness with politness, or rather vice versa.

Well. all I can say is, be phoney to me. If you are rude to my face, then there's that other cultural issue where we have to duel, you know. Being polite saves lives here.

No that's not a joke, unfortunately.

Well, if you don't mind being puked on... yes.

Besides, why in the hell would a woman want to cover up her natural smell?

It's already good enough

You obviously don't read what I say. I have no idea how you got that I equate phoniness with politeness.

I do NOT equate phoniness to to politeness. Being polite to someone's face and badmouthing them behind their back is not politeness.

I'll determine how close I want to get and how much I trust someone by how they treat others. If I notice they're only nice to people's faces and turn around and talk about them behind their back - I really don't want anything to do with them.

Let me see if I can parse it for you then. Politeness is acting in a certain manner in a social setting. Being polite to someone when you are talking to them, etc. even if you don't like them- for example.

I must be misunderstanding evidently, because that's what I thought you said you didn't like, because it was phoney.

Badmouthing someone behind their back doesn't have anything to do with politeness. It's a comment on that person's integrety perhaps, but such comments are made in a "private" setting, and aren't "social", and likely aren't meant to be.

Politeness:
Marked by or showing consideration for others, tact, and observance of accepted social usage.

If someone expresses their feelings about someone in a "private" group, that's not a "social" setting.

The quotations are there of course because the terms social and private are all relative in modern society.

Of course, the difficulty in communication about this issue could be a cultural difference you know. Just because I stop on the street and talk to you and say hello, ask about your job and your family etc. doesn't mean that I like you at all. Far from it.

It's not uncommon for people here who absolutely hate each other to nod to each other on the street and say hello. It stops folks from getting in fights and maintains a certain level of civility.
(which is quickly discarded in a bar )

But then, you are entitled to your like and dislikes, and your opinions. I've stated mine, I'll take politeness any day.

Well for your information - people here wave and say hello everytime I and others go to the mail box and I don't know them. Also - people stop here for people crossing the roadway. Also - I drive over two one lane bridges every day, neither bridge has a stop sign - but people routinely stop for each other and let each other go. I have never seen an accident on them. In Mansville a road goes from two lanes to one - and everyone merges. It's understood that every other car gets merged. Whereas in Indiana when a road went from two to one lane - you have fight to get in.

Obviously you don't know enough about the northeast to make a judgement whether we're rude - maybe it's just that the south is become rude all by itself and it's easy to blame the people from the north. I know it's the stereotype that the northeast is rude - but it's mostly made by people that don't have much experience here. I will admit that we don't have enough time to wait for people from the south and midwest to finish their sentences. People there talk a lot slower and drive incredibly slow.

By the way - there is politeness among strangers and there is politeness among people you know. If I know you and I don't like you - I'm not going to waste my breath saying hi to you or asking how things are going - because I really don't care. No sense in giving lip service to politeness if you hate the person.

I don't have any bumper stickers on my car. But I will say that it was common on Rt 65 from Indianapolis down to Seymour in areas of road construction and in Seymour IN in general. People will not let you merge.

I guess 5 years in the Hamptons, and near Boston just weren't enough to make a judgement. How much time did you spend down South? (as for driving slow, you haven't been to Atlanta... I've compared traffic and experienced drivers from the Boston area get the willies when the rednecks get off work)

No not everyone up North is rude, abrubt, crass, and in a hurry.

Neither is everyone down South slow, stupid, ignorant, or polite.

Stereotypes aside, it's a different culture.

Besides, if you really want to talk about rude, go to France.

But lets just drop it, before we lose our politeness

And that's exactly what I'm talking about. You see, if you do hate the person, there's every reason to be polite. If you don't know why, then I'm probably never going to be able to explain it to you.

Don't you know there are no rednecks in Atlanta anymore? It's all transplanted Yankees who live there now!

My friend is allergic to smoke and has a reaction so that she has to leave when in an enclosed area with cigarette smoke. Her parents thought she had food allergies for many years until they found out it was because of her dad's smoking!

Oh, by the way my Blacklung comment referred to the color of a person who has lung cancer's lungs. Ever been to the Boston science museum? That was enough to scare me off of smoking!

I think that of course people have the right to smoke if the want to, but for public places, no smoking is the "default." Not allowing people to smoke is more "fair" than forcing non-smokers to breathe cigarette smoke. I do agree that bars can decide if they want to allow smoking, and people can then choose whether or not to go in. People can also choose to eat at nonsmoking restaurants. It's a tough issue.

(And I agree that there are a lot more pollutants in the air that are more dangerous. I support clean air legislation. I'd buy an electric car if I could afford it.)

Individual Liberty , Freedom

If someone is stupid enough to smoke let them. Some may not

like it but a 16 year old with a car is much more dangerous.

Search out the W.H.O. report that completely debunks any effects

of second hand smoke. Can be hard to find but it's out there.

How much farther into socialism and govt. control of our lives are we willing to go : For the Children, for the Allergic ,for the ______ (insert your fav. special group here).

You can find a report that debunks just about anything. Personally, since I'm inhaling unfiltered smoke as a passive smoker, this can only mean that all the bad things are in the filter!

That would be the unfiltered smoke from : buses, cars, planes, power plants, forest and grass fires, fireplaces, furnaces, smelters, factories in general, farmers burning fields, ships, welders and stupid smokers. ;-)

Feel free to add anything else that burns.....................

You can find a report that proves just about anything , too.

Ignore them all and let people be free.

Well the Hamptons are just the Hollywood types of the east, Not very respresentative of the northeast. My sister lives in Tennessee and my father lived there for 5 and is currently back in Indiana. My uncle and cousins have lived in North Carolina for about 15 years.

I've lived in 6 states - California, New Jersey, Indiana , West Virginia, Illionois and Oregon. If we didn't move to Indiana to start up my father's company - we had also looked at Greenville SC, and Birmingham AL and we might have moved there. Oregon and New Jersey are the two places I feel most comortable. In WV we had a cross burning behind our dorm, a "townee" shot out the bathroom window next to my bedroom, a couple of years before I had gone there the KKK had marched on campus and had a rally.

Quote:

I won't be rude to a person I don't like - but I won't go out of my way to be nice either. I have noting to say to someone that doesn't like me though, so i would rather them not put on the fake politeness. By the way - the condescending attitude is a real demostration of southern politeness.

Also - I'm much less likely to trust someone that I notice talking about people behind their backs. I've basically distanced myself from several friends in Indiana who I had noticed were doing that to other people. My feeling was - if they were talking about others like that and acting nice to their face - then they were most likely doing it to me too. In several cases it was confirmed that they were. I still have a lot of friends in Indiana - and I plan on going out there in October. I just think that the whole "south/midwest being nicer than the northeast" is a bunch of crap.

Now back to our regularly scheduled thread.... Smoking.

I've gotten used to hanging around people who smoke, but for the longest time I couldn't stand being around smoking people, so I understand...er...

I never said nicer. I said politer.

I'm sure we understand the difference there.

Smoking bad. Kills. Takes money.

People buy. Why? People uneducated; people stupid.

People die. Big tobacco company love money, not life.

On a different note, I was contemplating what would happen if other drugs previously considered illegal were to creep into regular commercial use. Could we visit a grocery store, buy a magazine, a refreshing Snapple drink, and a package of Mr. Fenghi's Premium Cocaine? Oh, there would be other brands, too... feeding off the wallets and, quite literally, the life force of human beings world-wide.

A sad, sad state of affairs... people, though indirectly, killing people...

I don't think that the midwest or the south is anymore "politer" than the northeast.

Well now that's an accurate statement of what I thought you were saying earlier. I still disagree, however.

Yay, Nibs is back!

Well, I'm from the midwest, and I'd say that there's a pretty even ratio of rude/polite people. I've had doors held open for me by complete strangers, and I've had people I know just keep going and refuse to hold the door for anyone, even if there is no way for the person to open the door (ie, holding groceries or schoolbooks).
