I have never gotten a chance to express my opinion about this subject so I will now. I think that Balrogs do have wings. But I think that they are wings used only for display, on account of the fact that for a Balrog to have wings that it could fly with, the wings would have to be etremely large, otherwise they would not support the weight of the Balrog, however, it has been established that the balrogs were able to live undergroud, and while Khazad Dum was big it would still not be big enough to accomodate the size of wings requiered, this leaves the conclusion that the Wings of Shadow described in the book we're a form of power display that we're suitable only for mating displays and intimidation. Which brings us to the even more interesting question of Which type of display was the Balrog in Moria using it's wings for? Mating or intimidation?

Mating. Balrogs have a fondness for Pippins.

The poor Balrog, Gandalf must have broken it's heart.

Jedipati- On the queastion on whether Balrogs have wings...as previously stated, that is now a source of humor in the world of Tolkien fans. On TheOneRing.net they have a list of the top ten LOTR toys that have to be made, and one just happends to be a balrog with detachable wings. I too agree with others that if a Balrog did have wings, that it wouldn't fall. However, like other animals maybe its' body-weight is too great for the Balrog to fly. There's something you might not have thought of. I don't want to start something huge by posting this....so be nice.

I believe the display wings were for intimidation, as our Balrog was the last.

Here's a fine little compromise. A balrog is an Ainur.
Ainur have the ability to take different forms. (unless they lock themselves into a certain form for particular reasons, such as sauron or melkor did). So if a Balrog wanted wings, he'd have wings. And it he wanted tentacles, he'd have tentacles. And if he wanted giant goat balls, he'd have giant goat balls....

I don't think so. They were a race- they all were like each other (not exactly like each, roughly). So I think that if one of them have wings, they all had.

Hmmm, and if a balrog wanted wings that could make it fly? Would it then materialize wings, and then fall off a mountain/down a chasm?
