Coney is absolutely right. All that hormone mumbo-jumbo says about as much about love as farming does about haute cuisine.

Nice/nasty; ugly/beautiful. Combinations of all four exist:

Nice-ugly. Probably most people think of themselves in this category, because lots of people don't have a positive self-image. Just because you think you're ugly doesn't mean everyone else does. Also, just because you think you're nice, doesn't mean anyone else does either, as they don't know that you mean well. So, on reflection, this category doesn't actually exist.

Nasty-beautiful. We all know a few of these. They spend their entire life getting away with it, hence grow up to become arrogant and sadistic.
How to handle them: These people don't respect anyone who kow-tows to them, so the best thing is to punch their lights out and mess up those pretty features before they even have a chance to start abusing you. That way you'll get their instant respect and if you keep it up, they'll fall in love with you.

Nice-beautiful. These people DO exist, honestly. However, they have to spend most of their time fending off the unwanted attention of (nasty-beautiful) @rseholes and are subject to feelings of isolation and helplessness. Often end up in miserable relationships with said a.hole just for a bit of peace and quiet.
How to handle them: If you don't possess a white charger and suit of field plate armour, product differentiation is the key: be self-contained and happy in yourself and they (if they're really nice) will notice you. That, and maybe a crowbar to remove competitors.

These people are grist to the corporate mill, as they invariably become accountants or lawyers and end up running the show. They are ideally suited for this, since they delight in inflicting misery on others. Thus, they can condemn thousands to death, poverty and/or slavery with alacrity.
How to handle them: It is quite common to make the mistake of extending the hand of charity to such afflicted individuals, in the erroneous belief that they will appreciate it. This invariably results in them biting said hand off and using the sinews as dental floss. The best approach is to round up a lynch mob and drive them off the nearest cliff. Do this now before they get to law school.

I've said it many times before and I'll say it again. Love is a gift, love is a curse. I barely get to see my girlfriend nowadays with both of us being so busy in school (oh yes, love does exist in high school...though since we don't go to the same school I might be wrong) and every moment I'm away from her it eats away at me. But everytime I'm with her, it's like (to use the old cliche) heaven.
But now I have a friend who went to homecoming with a girl who was a good friend, thought they became a little more than friends, and started fawning on her, along with that came jealousy which rides with suspicion. So now he's paranoid that he's going to lose her and if he does he'll get extremely depressed (I know because he was dumped by another friend last year and spent months moping). The bad thing is, she still thinks of him as just a friend, but won't tell him so because she knows as well that she'll shatter his heart. And I'm stuck in the middle because both of them are confiding in me and I helped get the two of them to go to homecoming in the first place!
*takes several breaths*
So now I risk losing my friend because he's suspicious that she likes me because she looks at me more than him during conversations between the three of us (but he's so blind he doesn't realize that I talk for most of the conversation while he says barely anything) and she was such a good friend of his that if it does end I'm very concerned he may start to consider suicide because he's been near that place before!

New update. She told him today that she just wants to be friends. He was obviously devastated but is going to try to stay friends anyway. He's even going to talk to her tomorrow to work things out (something he wasn't likely to do). It was a hard thing to watch him fall. But hopefully all will turn out for the best.
