If pop culture is what is popular, and what is popular is no longer what used to be popular, than what does that make pop culture now? (sorry couldn't resist) but seriously things change so much (or give the illusion of changing) that it is hard to tell what is really popular. But maybe there are so many things that are popular that everything is popular. It is very true what SP said about going with the grain.(and I totally agree about matching shirts and eyeshadow). I've bought fashion magazines and I've listened to nsync and britney spears and I really don't care what people think of me for it. my fave store for clothes is sally ann or value village (the prices are great!

Carafin, too true! Pop Culture trends change so fast that by the time you here what's in it's already out! Many magazines have recurring articles about what is "in" and what is "out" in a wide variety of subjects like music, fashion, movies, even catch phrases! The catch phrase ones crack me up, we remember those silly things long after everyone is sick of them, and after a few years they often don't even seem to make sense. When't the last time you heard someone say "Where's the beef?" LOL, how many of you are too young to even remember that fad? I fear that "Whasssssssssssssssup!" will greatly outlast it's ammusement. But I was sad to read a list that said "peace out" was out, I like that one, and will probably enjoy it long after everyone else hates it!

Hey! I still say that! I traumitized Mirahzi on Calvinball with it! I'd like to hear a rap song where they didn't use foul language, just stuff like Jive Turkey and "fool" and sho'nuff and whatever.

There has always been pop culture as long as the phase has had any meaning. What is different today is the lack of alternating music. Even bands like Linkin' Park are not much more than heavy boy bands. There will be someone or some sub-culture that will excite a new wave of creativity, meanwhile I'll just fill in the holes in my current collection.

I do like System of a Down but other that a few holdovers from the nineties there is little to get excited about.

Popular culture is a simple manifestation of what a large segment of the population is responding to at the moment. Shakespeare was a popular playwright, Verdi and Rossini were popular composers, and Liszt had hordes of screaming female fans. Today they are considered high-brow. History has a way of winnowing out all but those few whose works continue to resonate. This doesn't mean the best work survives, only the work that continues to be relevant to a vocal segment of the population.

Why is there so much dreck now? There always was, only thankfully we are not aware of it all. Most people are not looking for challenges when they seek entertainment, they are looking for escape into a comfort zone, a place that is familiar and that confirms what they already believe.

As for trying to forge your own path and not follow the crowd, the immortal Frank Zappa once said that we are all wearing uniforms. Amen.

Exactly Hasty Ent. 50 years later - we really don't hear about the crappy movies - only the classics. The same will happen 50 years from now. Only the exceptional really survives. Everything else either becomes cult status (Ed Wood B Movies) or religated to the trash heap. The only reason why things seem worse today - is because people forget about the crap that was generated before. For Every Beethoven - there were hundreds of popular musicians of the time that we have no idea idea who they were.

Older generations ALWAYS look to their youth through rose colored glasses. Everything was better when they were growing up. I really hope that I don't end up being like that.

Honkey is a diragatory word for a white person. It's similar to saying nigger for a black person. Although I know a lot of people would disagree. I was called that once by a black person when I was in elementary school. Both I feel are just words - just depends how you use them or what is really in your heart. The person said it with hatred. We had been friends but got into a serious fight (not a physical fight though) - but I can't remember what we were arguing about.

Well considering that Don Henley had in one of his songs about "Cadilacs with Grateful Dead stickers" I think we can pretty much assume they would. Also - a lot of famous and world reknowned orchestras already play Beatles songs.

The edge of popular culture keeps moving, doesn't it? I remember being in a mainstream supermarket years ago and stopping dead in my tracks when I realized the Muzak they were piping through the speakers was a song by the Talking Heads. At the time I tried to pin down exactly when they stopped playing Henry Mancini, and couldn't. Then it occurred to me -- I am becoming that other generation that listens to 'oldies' and knows all the words...sigh...

I think the word 'pop' became widely used around the time of Andy Warhol, right? His 'pop art' and whatnot?

It's not so much that 'pop culture' is popular, but something that is popular is pop culture...

Actually, the term 'pop art' first appeared in Britain during the 50's, although Warhol is probably the best known practitioner, so perhaps you're right SP, and that's when it became widely used.

I suppose what troubles me about listening to 'oldies' is that I remember when they were the latest and greatest. Just a passage of time thing -- but that's exactly what can be most interesting about popular culture -- what it says about society at large, its tastes and predilections.

I'm sorry - but there is nothing stopping other countries from making music. NZ and any other country can make music and most do. Some of it becomes popular here. There are a lot of bands and singers from other countries. It's just that once they become popular it seems as if they automatically get thought of as American Musicians. Granted - a lot of them end up moving here - such as John Lennon.

And all the oldies music was manufactured too. The Beatles had to show up on the Sullivan Show in order to really make it here. There was packaging and commercialism with all the popular groups - including when music was"better". Which I don't think it was better - it was just different.
