Nice work, all you artists! Nice!
It is frustrating to turn big beautiful stuff into little teensy pix! I'll post some of my paintings when my husband gets me a site to post from. Arien, have you ever tried water-color pencils? I have a set, but am too busy painting to get to them. Also, what do you think of soft pastels? Soft pastel is one of my favorite mediums (the other being acrylic) You get some of the control of drawing, but the rich color and blendability of paint. Soft pastel is a good way to ease into painting. Right now I'm doing all abstract. I got pretty bored doing realistic stuff...abstract is very "intuitive", I like that. It's lots of fun and just the thing to break the boredom of constantly trying to make something "look" like something...if you know what I mean?!

Painting isn't so bad but it requires patience and like I've said, I have none! I remember a few years ago in one of my drawing classes, my teacher saying that oil pastels were harder to use than hard pastels, which is what I primarily use now. I want to get some water color pencils but I have to settle with Crayola for now b/c the kind I want is Prismacolor and they are SOOOOO expensive! |

Oh. I usually just use a touch of detail, to bring attention to a focal point. I've really loosened my style up over the years! I dislike oil pastel! It reminds me of being a little kid in school, coloring with crayons.....I guess I haven't gotten "that" loose!

I have several boxes, my largest (and softest) are Rembrandts. Of course, the softer, the messier. I always work on white paper, though many enjoy using colored papers. I love blending, so swirly blended backgrounds are so fun to do. They have pastel pencils also! There are so many products, an artist needs to spend hours and hours experimenting and playing just to discover what they like.
My husband is a musician...he will play something over and over, to get it down the way he wants. A visual artist rarely repeats themself, maybe their style gets repeated a bit, but not the same picture over and over. THAT would drive me nuts!

here is Yavanna....(curse the small image size!!! )
I wish you guys could see my work up close so that you can see all the detail...so much gets lost when I have to reduce it to such a low resolution Last edited by Arien the Maia : 01-10-2004 at 12:19 AM. |

That's what I love about this abstract class...ithe artwork just evolves. My teacher does NOT want us to "pre think" our work. She specifies certain techniques be used, and of course everyones stuff looks different. Then we work on pulling a piece up from what has happened with the freeform techniques. This requires skill in finding a focal point, and using the values of color to make the eye travel, etc etc etc.....Anyway, since you really don't know what you are going to do, there's no "mistakes" to make. Of course, you can "not like" your work, then you just keep adding or changing. Actually, the hardest thing is knowing when to stop!
Yes, you will have to host your pix somewhere and get them bigger! If detail is "your thing" then we need to see it all to appreciate it! She looks very lovely, and green IS my favorite color! I wish I could see her face better.
