Maybe a bit short, but I think it should be possible.

Some say I am the largest, [You could argue that there are mychorrhizal colonies larger than the largest trees.]
I know I am the tallest, [The tallest organism alive is either a pine or a sequoia, hard to measure.]
Of the things that live.

I'm also the most old, [The oldest organism is a bristle cone pine 5000+ years, it's in California.]

Outside I can guide you, [You can use trees to sometimes figure out what direction you're going, as well as the fire/disturbance history of the area.]

I like your riddle, I was just expecting the answer to be something more specific, in which case I probably wouldn't have got it!

i've tried to write a few riddles but they're all crappy. but i'll keep trying, and i'll test them out on my brother to see if they're ok.
