All Hobbits? That was my first thought...

Nice little rhythm with that riddle, too. Nice work!

They're HOBBITS! You really need to make your riddles harder, K.

(Note: I'm joking. Your riddles are PLENTY hard.)

We need to take turns and quit cross-posting, huh?

edit: after that last hint, I'm not so sure, but I'll stick with the guess.
I'll go ahead and say this: it's not something from the Hobbit, and it's not an event. The riddle refers to one object, one "work"

It's not the book, the Hobbit? That was his first ME book, and it preceded LOTR, then all the other histories that he wrote, and some that were even published posthumously.

Yes, correct!

First set out to entertain, -Tolkien wrote the hobbit just as a children's story
a dwarf work unfurled, -"dwarf" work, short book
but it grew taller and taller, -grew into numerous books about ME
little hole became world. -from the first words of the Hobbit, "in a little hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit"
the words Tolkien just jotted down one day

Here's another one:

Flowing through towering white trees,
Lamenting a loss, or so it seemed,
The singers really sharing a pure, bright light
To be shed where the trees grew far less white.

Okay...this appears to be harder than I expected it to be! Let me bask in the confusion that Keith K also enjoyed...

another hint: this riddle is a huge play on words. It refers to one object, but that object may or may not actually be in ME. It might have to do with Tolkien himself...possibly
Well, if it's Tolkien himself, and his work is what is being alluded to, then the object could be The Hobbit itself.

The hobbit tales first began as bedtime stories for his children, I think.

Of course his first story was of Gondolin, which grew into The Silmarilion.

These are all children of Samwise Gamgee and Rose Cotton (the first 6 children). To think there were 7 more!

That they are, Wil. That they are. The Children of Samwise is the answer!

Okay, now try this one:

A gift to Dwarves,
yet spurned them by,
teeth that cannot bite.
As time went by it came to be
the cause of bitter enmity.

Scatha's teeth. Fram's gift to the dwarves...

Actually, no, but close! "Flowing" is a play on words...but Lothlorien is the setting.

Re-posting this so you don't have to scroll all the way up:

Flowing through towering white trees,
Lamenting a loss, or so it seemed,
The singers really sharing a pure, bright light
To be shed where the trees grew far less white.

Remember when I told you that you would never forget the solution to this after all that agony? Well, I was wrong!
I guess I'm quite guilty of being forgetful. I figured the ship would be white - once transformed into a star. Although we know it to technically be a planet, I've always thought this 'star' in ME lore is Venus - known as both the morning star and the evening star.

Wow - lots of riddling posts today. This is great!

Keith K: maybe my mind is just not active enough for me to be the solver I used to be.

Another off the top of my head:

Standing solemn and tall
In a forest now small
Slaughtered by a White Hand
Whose power none could withstand.

This is officially my first attempt at a Tolkien riddle...

Two heroes this blade has known
Malice and dread it has sown
One blade that could iron cut
Stabbing upwards from a rut
Enemy’s end it brought with pain
Wielders bane, wielders bane
