You are right, HB.

Glenn Gould. Very good --- it's a shame he died so young (right??).

Wrong! He was at least 83

btw, I cant find any recording of the Schmidt work on Amazon...what recording does your dad have?

By the way, at Hastings I found a double-discer of Ravi Shankar's Sitar Concertos, with the two famous London Orchestras, Andre Previn and Zubin Mehta.

really (Gould) ... my mind is playing tricks on me.

I really like Mendelsohn--just listened to "Reformation Symphony" (#5).

Amazon says the Schmidt is out of print . My dad picked it up on a whim at Borders (because it uses a huge orchestra, chorus, and organ...sounded impressive in the store). You can buy it at www.arkivmusic.com (great online classical music store. They have good sales sometimes, too).

Here it is at ArkivMusic

My dad absolutely loves it

I read about the Schmidt work in Steinberg's book "Choral Masterworks".

You like the "Reformation" Symphony? I do too, but Medelssohn's No.2 "Hymn of Praise" is my fav after the Italian. Have you heard his "Ruy Blas" overture?

Are you guys going extict or just busy? Where's Fat Middle I wonder...

Anyways

New Additions:

Ravel: Complete score of Daphnis et Chloe/Andre Previn
Ramsey: Choral Music (this is an oldie from the 1400's)
Brahms: Double Concerto/YoYoMa, Stern, Abbado
Brahms: The Symphonies/Gunter Wand
Brahms: piano concerto no.1/Franck: variations symphoniques

and a disc called "Baroque Opera", which, having the wonderful Teresa Berganza, Marilyn Horne, Pavarotti, and my new favorite Emma Kirkby sing music by Piccinni (not to be confused with Puccini), Handel, Cavalli, Arne, Monteverdi, Pergolesi, and Rameau (there's also a wonderful Overture on there by him)....it's become one of my favorite cds to listen to.

Here, here

I'm sorry I haven't posted in months, but I'm still reading the board frequently.

The blame for my absence must go to excesive work and to a classical music forum I'm getting adicted

Well, in fact I'm not only getting adicted to the forum... It is an emule forum so it cames along with the habit of downloading CDs via emule or via bittorrent. I know this sounds dirty, but I'm finding so many great recordings that I cannot stop

I'm glad you like Teresa Berganza and Emma Kirkby!!! Have you got Pergolessi's Stabat Mater with her and James Bowman. One year ago or so I spent almost a whole month listening to that recording again and again. Emma Kirkby is also wonderful in Bach's cantata BWV 81 (I think that's the number) "Jauchzet (sp?) Gott in alles landen", conducted by Gardiner.

I've spent these months in a very baroque mode and also listening a lot of vocal religious music, but right now I'm coming out of it and am listening more piano and sinfonic music.

Well, I hope to post more often from now on.

I just thought I should mention that the guy who did the score for Chronicles of Narnia was interviewed by Jim Svejda on KUSC recently, and was followed immediately by the music from the remake of some movie called Flight of the Pheonix and it sounded like the Jerry Goldsmith score for Planet of the Apes, as the composer was quick to point out.

And now, the latest of my transcribed KUSC funny commercials...

Addicting you say, that's how I felt when I was looking through a cataloque of Harmonia Mundi's. They had so many things I wanted, my mouth was literally watering. Purcell's "King Arthur", Beethoven's Oratorio, Schubert songs etc...and Finally I know how Philip Herreweghe looks. I've been listening a lot to my Best of Gilbert and Sullivan. It's so addicting!
Did you guys know that Ravel calls for chorus in Daphnis et Chloe?

I meant to reply to your above post.

Are you guys only doing those selections of The Planets?

I love The Planets, but it's one of those works that you should only indulge in on occasion, because I already can't listen to Mars all the way through.

GOOGLE did a special Mozart Anniversary design! Go look

Oh! I forgot!
I bought the Brahms/Schumann Violin concertos with Joshua Bell and Christoph von Dohnanyi.
But the Violin Conc. that really blows me away is Stravinsky's (Hilary Hahn, Neville Marriner et al). That "Toccata" first movement is genius, pure genius. I've resolved to buy everything Stravinsky from now on.
...But of course, I do that with every composer Don't I?

For the start of the Mozart-year, Klara (a Flemish classical radio) calculated you could fill 11 days with all the music that Mozart wrote plus commentary and proceeded to play them all one after another for 11 days. I listened to some of it, but am somewhat embarrassed to say I hardly recognized anything.

Do you mean anything else in the Planets or in the whole concert?

In addition to Mars, Venus, and Jupiter,
we are doing Movement I (Gandalf) of the Lord of the Rings Symphony (orchestrated version) by Johan De Meij (This was written in the mid-90s before the movies came out)
and the strings are doing something from the Holberg Suite by Grieg.

It really varies by conductor how much music we do. A few years ago they did tons of stuff (but obviously would've worked on the things a lot less).

We have about 15 hours of rehearsal total (when you take out meal times and breaks and warm ups, etc. Thursday, Friday, and a teeny bit on Saturday, then the concert Saturday night.

Oh well, I'd forget my own birthday if I didn't have a calendar or someone to remind me.

Mars is great, besides my being a Martian. Ha! Like Obi Wan Kenobi said, but as though referring to me! "Not the last of the old Martians, Bren. The first of the new."
I fail to remember where Obi Wan said that, but I've seen the quotes on several sites, so I'm taking it for granted.

Anyway, Jerry Goldsmith did Planet of the Apes perfectly. I recorded the score with my recording program directly from the DVD as it was in the drive. On with creative, on with PotA, and poof! I only have to wait eight minutes and then wait a little longer for it to convert to MP3. Well, actually, I just saved it as a wave, but you get the idea.
