Sounds cool. Never got the hang of the sling. Always ended up smacking myself in the forehead or striking whom/whatever was behind me.

Actually, rather nearby, I chunks of obsidian lie about on the ground. The Coachella Valley is rather geologically active; there's some volcanoes down by the Salton Sea, with a rather large obsidian source.

I've never heard of an archaeological summer camp... VERY interesting!

Well, part of the problem might be using mostly leather. I weave all of my slings. Good tutorials can be found on slinging.org; I prefer the "Rockman" sling as my favorite style. However, I did sew a leather pouch onto a sling and it worked rather well.

Right, guess I should have thought about that. Most obsidian artifacts found in Western Europe had to be imported from Silicy, hence I tend to think of flint for toolmaking first.

LOL Yes. You got me wondering, though, what to expect on-site for an obsidian source, as the last time I was in the area of Salton's Obsidian Butte, looking at rocks was far from my 12-year-old mind. So at the Living Desert today, two of the docents, Bob and Joe, were arguing over the energy released in earthquakes (Bob was saying something about an integral, which is what caught my attention in the first place). This reminded me of the obsidian, so I thought I'd ask them as they're professionally amateur geologists of sorts. Now, I was expecting to hear that chunks of obsidian larger than a first are quite rare, but instead, I was told to expect large, soccer-ball sized boulders! So, it seems I won't need to bring buckets to collect small pieces; I can just load a few pieces into the trunk of the car of whomever was nice enough to give me a ride.

I'm not so worried about the percussion flaking, but pressure flaking is unnerving. I'm probably going to do most of my work at Starbucks (minus heat treating and stuff like that).
