True enough; if it's a video recording, at least you can watch his eyebrows jump all over the place, but in audio, meh. Not actually a huge fan of Damrau, either, and I'm disappointed that David Daniels was dropped from the original cast, but besides that, it's a friggin' awesome cast.
Here's another of my baroque-must-haves. Oh, Bostrich! Villazon could learn a few things from him.

Yeah, plus Villazon blew his voice out... and it looks like his technique hasn't improved a bit since then. :-/ That really kind of puts me off. I truly admire a singer, like Dessay, who blows their voice out in the midst of an enormous career, and comes back stronger and better for it.... where as someone who just comes back and keeps straining and is fairly mediocre?
But that is just my opinion. I have no problem if someone loves Villazon... I have some friends who absolutely adore him. I just don't personally like him. Funny you should say that about Damrau, I'm not a huge fan either although in her case I have a lot of respect for her... not crazy about her voice, but I think what she does is quite impressive. I'm with you, though... wish they'd gotten Bostridge. At least he's got a little bit of a low voice. Did you hear Villazon totally die off in the middle of that one melizma when it went too low? Two things though!!!! Is it just me or is Ian not straining so crazily when he sings any more? You can hear it in his voice, too... he always sounded great, but now he sounds a little more free. Secondly, is it just me or does he look better now that he's a little older? He always looked so awkward in his older photos and videos, but he looks quite handsome now. |

Definitely not twisting himself into knots anymore (though, I actually thought that was a fun bit of spectacle ), and you can hear less strain in his voice, as well.
But no, his head still looks like an egg. David Fray, on the side bar, though . . . >.>

This is really beautiful. Although I have to say, I disagree with the posters below. I used to dislike Renee Fleming immensely, but now I really love her. In my opinion the little scoops and sighs that she developed into her voice help make her truly unique, and I can't think of many other singers that can pull them off the way she can. I don't think that this un-ornamented style is any better than her current style. I know a lot of sopranos who can sing it the way she does in this video, but I don't personally know any who can sing it the way she would now a days. |

It's technically still Christmas, right? So it's technically still kosher to post Messiah bits, right? Right? >.>

Two things.
Renee Fleming again, JUST BECAUSE. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEcpVxDJtoM "Adieu notre petite table" from Manon by Massenet. I love Massenet... think I really fell in love with his music while I was working on the scene from Thais. |

This lady remains one of my greatest influences in the Baroque repertoire... I have so much respect for her work.

Of course, any day is improved by the dizzying coloratura of Vivica Genaux. Seriously, I think 2,000 of the views on this video are probably mine.

GW, I love the Delibes Flower Duet . Never gets old. Unless you listen to it 5,000 times in a row. And then it merely becomes a tad wilted. Nothing a little water can't revive .
I haven't changed a bit . Still listening to Berlioz and Sibelius, mostly.
