Apparently, anti-papal protestors were spotted in Britain with signs decrying, "Down with this sort of thing." Father Ted Lives!

That made my day.

Over here, we have the Night of Darkness: once a year the lights get extinguished in a lot of places, and amateur and professional stargazers drag out their telescopes and start gathering. Sometimes I think it's a pity it only happens once a year. Way too much artificial light on at night. And the night-sky is so pretty.

Is that a national thing then? If so, it seems Belgium really cares for its stargazers

It doesn't happen to coincide with Earth Hour, does it?

Flemish only, I think. Walloonia isn't as urbanised and doesn't have light-pollution to the same degree. But not every town joins in, of course, so depending on where you live you might not even notice. But it is customary from participating towns and cities to set up activities like night-time forest walks or drinks by candle-light. Some of the astronomy clubs or telescopes open for visitors or hold excursions.

The Nacht van de Duisternis (Night of Darkness) has been around a little longer than Earth Hour, and lasts a whole night (20h-8h). Takes place in October. But the reasons for organising it are pretty much similar: that too much light at night can have negative effects on the health of humans and nature, that a more rational use of the light and the required energy may not be a bad idea and that otherwise the gorgeous night-sky becomes permanently invisible in the glare. It is said that from space, you can see the outline of Belgium (or at least Flanders) at night like a shining beacon, just from the many lights that are on.

So it is not directly done for the astronomers, but it is they who profit of it the most.

I believe the Netherlands have something similar around the same time, The Night of Night.

I've never heard of it, but maybe in the West and South?

America needs to do something like that for stargazers. I mean many of the Western States don't have the light pollution problem, but I would love to just sit in the yard and stargaze again like I used to

Starsky is still quite beautiful in Finland IMO, especially during winter. We're lucky. Hope it gets better for everyone else.

To my knowledge, sadly, light pollution is not in decline anywhere. But Finland is still scarcely populated and the cold air and dark nights during wintertime make for good stargazing conditions.

Well, yesterday it was Afghanistan. Today the turn has come to me and my fellow compatriots to seek out the ballot boxes, like we do every 4th year in September. I managed to be first person to vote at my polling station, something which gave a certain satisfaction Apparently the first voter gets to check that the ballot box is empty before they seal it. I accomplished this duty gallantly

A co-worker once had the meowing of a cat on her mobile phone to announce new text messages. It took me and another co-worker nearly half an hour of looking for a cat that must have strayed into the shop before figuring that out.

Where do you find a sound clip that can be used on the phone?

I had a dog barking for a ring a while back, and the cover for my phone was a little furry dog

Varna, I'm with Verizon, and I just used their library of sound clips for phones. I imagine every company has tones for sale, and I think you can also get them from other companies, too - try googling "cell phone ring tones" and look into it.

I've just discovered a series of Henry VIII shorts, which as rather a history nerd, I find hilarious.
