"And we're back on M.O.O.T. 102,2 with the Mootia City Philharmonic Orchestra performing this special version of Jerusalem in honour of Acally and Hector's ascent to the throne..."

And was those threads in ancient time
begun upon entmoot's forums green?
And was Hector Berlioz
On Enmoot's pleasant pastures seen?
And did Acally's wondrous face
Shine forth brightly in this place?
And was Entmoot filled with lace
Amongst this great Mootian race?

Bring me my posts of burning gold:
Bring me my words of desire:
Bring me my threads: O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my smilies of fire!
I will not cease from posting much,
Nor shall my hands leave the kb
Till we have typed a lot of words
In Entmoot's green and pleasant boards.

Are you actually working on something like this? Because that would be cool.

ATWLHOL Yes and no.

I am intensely interested in flintknapping and intend for it to be among my new hobbies, so yes. However, I've not been able to get a hold of obsidian for this purpose yet, and don't know if I will actually like it, so no. Basically, I'm tired of having to pay for pre-made arrows and atlatl darts, so I'm gonna make my own.

I would love to learn that stuff. I'm not sure about obidian being good arrow material. I have a friend who would know, though. So I shall ask him and see what he says.

LOL, but it is. That's what many of the arrow points found or currently made are made out of! Not to mention Acheulian handaxes and such.

This is true, well knapped obsidian is sharper than steel and has been used since the dawn of man, just about. The good thing about it as a hunting point, on an atlatl or an arrow was that it would shatter once it was in the animal, causing shrapnel to tear about on the insides, stopping the animal in its tracks.

I used to knap with the old fashion elk horn tools after I was introduced to the art in a summer archeology camp. Only downside is that you have to buy stock in bandaids, because you are going to cut the hell out of your hands with the little shards that fly off. Also, wear safety glasses, because if you place the horn edge at the wrong angle those chips will fly into your face. It hurts. I think I may have some of my axe heads somewhere about and I know that I have long since shattered what arrowheads I had made.

It's a fun hobby, TB, what made you get into it? I see you mentioned Atlatls and arrowheads, so have you taken up the more primitive forms of archery?

Yes, I would love to use antler of some sort (elk have antlers, not horns--big difference :P ). They say moose antler is the best for most applications. But anyway, I'll probably make a copper billet out of a dowel and a nail for pressure flaking.

I don't know... Somehow I just slowly became more and more aware of other "paleo arts" after my friend Andrew introduced me to the sling.

BTW, barefoot running is not for the faint of heart...

If on the animal it's called antlers, once it's off and it's just the material, it's called horn.

Wouldn't know about the variation of antler/horn or which one is best. I just horked a set of my friend's tools.

Sounds cool. Never got the hang of the sling. Always ended up smacking myself in the forehead or striking whom/whatever was behind me.

O.O Man invented shoes for a reason.

The experimental archaeologists here usually use actual flint, which I reckon may be easier to come by for prehistoric tool-making. I suppose obsidian knolls may be rather expensive.

I've always wanted to make a spearthrower after using one in an archaeological summercamp, but alas I never had the time and the materials, neither the place to use them if I ever managed to create them. I probably wouldn't have been good at it either, if my 'skill' with bow and arrow is anything to go by...

Ooh, the sling! I would have loved to be able to do that. I once made one from a few scraps of leather, but they didn't exactly work. I reckoned I was doing something wrong, but I never figured out what.
