#2 sounds like Bilbo talking about Thorin.

OK, in limmerick form:

Like spears in a row,
Not only for show,
My bane strung them along,
But my revenge was still strong,
For his gift was what brought him down low!

not bilbo's shirt...

the payment was for something else, but the "time of great need" was the battle of five armies

The necklace Bilbo received... that he gave to the Elven King on their parting (in payment for his... keep, while hanging out in the Elven King's Halls! )??

Christiana: No... keep trying on mine.

correct!!!

the necklace of girion

given by girion to the dwarves under the mountain for a suit of mithril mail for his eldest son... later given back to bard (girion's descendent) by dain as part of bilbo's fourteenth... and bard then gave it to the king of the woodelves for his help during the smaug's destruction of laketown and the battle of five armies

Oh - I might have had the wrong necklace then... wasn't it a necklace that Bilbo gave directly to the Elvenking when they parted on the journey home to 'reimburse' him? I'll have to dig up my book and check again when I get home tonight.

Sorry! Maybe I'll have to switch back to my 'tower' avatar.

Nope - the bane isn't the One Ring... I was trying to be a bit more subtle... but to give a hint, Christiana has been beatin' about the right bush, so to speak.

Brownjenkins... bah! Nothing too hard for us trivia-geeks! SOMEbody would get it eventually (even if I gotta look it up!)

Just kidding. Trying to find an excuse to my failure with the riddle...

When you say Christiana has been beating about the right bush, do you mean she was close?
