I can read it now. It says 'For Linaewen. Do it now: there may be a law against it tomorrow". I'm so proud. ^-^

I've never tried writing Tengwar, but I did start speaking Quenya. I got quite far with it but I can't say may 'training' is complete. My friend and I studied it together but just when we started speaking in proper sentences, we hit matric. We just didn't get around to it any more and now my Quenya is rather rusty. I'm glad I bothered to study it though, knowing (or being able to figure out) what names in Tolkien's books means makes reading them even more fun!

Yeah, the reading part really goes south on ya if you don't keep in practice.

I just pulled out my Tengwar notes - I have a feeling I'm going to be needing to write some Tengwar on my Ecuador trip - 2 weeks with my husband's family! I love 'em, but we're gonna be together like ALL the time, and I think I'll need an outlet ...

I doodled this picture of a wizard on a letter I was writing a friend and I decided he should be saying something, using tengwar. Considering I haven't written in a very very long time, I was really surprised how quickly it came back to me! I was writing letters without even thinking about it. I just need to remember which consonants are which. I couldn't remember how to make double consonants though. You know, the finer points. I remembered the s-curls though, RÃ*an.

Edit: Sweet Elentari, it's bad quality.. but, you can see my tengwar for the first time here now. I couldn't get it to post for the longest time because it was always too big, and for some reason it wouldn't upload when it was jpeg so I had to change it to gif, which made it look even worse. But you might be able to make it out if you save it then open in in picture and fax viewer or something and make it bigger. Any advice on how to post things more competently? By the way, I never did get a scanner. I just used my digital camera.

Edit again: I forgot to say what it is: it's the lyrics to a Japanese song, so don't freak out if you don't understand it. Here's the word so at least you know what I'm trying to write anyway. I'll write in english later. Oh yeah, and remember, this is my first attempt at writing in a really long time so sorry if it's not very good technically speaking.

Thanks so much, katya! That was really sweet! (and very pretty)

One of the things I was going to do in Ecuador, but didn't get a chance to do, was to write some Tengwar on a stone and throw it off the top of the Andes to land somewhere in the rainforest - just didn't get a chance to do it I really wish I had ...

Hey, that's a pretty cool idea! (even if you didn't do it... ) I thought the previous writing on the stone in this thread was really cool so I made my own, but I accidentally switched into quenya mode half-way through and didn't notice.^^; I'll have to find more rocks i guess.

*notices how rock art is catching on, is very pleased*

I have a box full of nice smooth stones (found to my knowledge only on a certain Corsican beach) just for the purpose of writing tengwar on them, katya.

RÃ*an, that would have been a very cool idea. pity you didn't had the time.

Writing in tengwar so beats knitting.

Can't argue with that (not until I've tried knitting, then I decide).

I'd send you some if you weren't so far away. Two years ago I spent more than half of my vacation looking for smooth river rocks to paint on and to my frustration I never found any smooth enough. But then in the last week, when we went to a beach there were dozens just lining the path! I went collecting right away.

Indeed. Only I need to get practising them again...

*gasp*

How come I didn't notice this thread before?
Thanks for reviving it!

For now, I read only your starting post, RÃ*an... and looked at the attachments... all I can say is WOW. Surely you mentioned it, but what kind of pen did you use for that Nargothrond-poem? So beautiful-looking, I never could achieve that...

One of the first things I did after buying the original LOTR & Sil was trying to read the Tengwar on the covers, so I dived into Appendices, and learned to use them as well. First, I copied them as if I were drawing... but the more I practiced, the more it became like a real writing. Coming to think of it, it was the same way as little children learn to write, starting with circles, and lines, and bent lines, and linking the letters, etc... and slowly developing their own handwriting.

How my Tengwar look like is somewhere between those round & straight ones from the book covers, and the thin & fine ones from the Ring-inscription. (I didn't have time to scan some in... )

I love it! So beautiful And no one arond me can read Tengwar

I just used a chisel-point pen - a coupla bucks at a craft store. Just hold it at a 45 degree angle, and you'll write like a pro!
