Amazon.com has a special deal: free 2-day shipping for a year for students with a .edu email address (even an old one; I used the one from my undergrad). Worth checking out, if you haven't noticed it already.

Went to check out a pub. As soon as I got my beer, I found a text from a friend, saying he and another friend were at another pub. So, I chugged that beer in like 90 seconds, and ran down to meet them. We had lunch, with two more beers for me, and then I went to see Miss Conception, and had three more. All of this means: I am officially Hammered.

I went to go see my Archbishop today, to talk about expanding the Church's ministry to gay people while remaining true to Church teaching. He was so open, and so receptive, the whole thing went beautifully. He gave me his personal e-mail, and wants me to keep in contact with him about the whole thing. I always knew he was a man of great heart and humility, but this just confirmed it all the more.

Good for you, Gwai!!!
![]() I'm still -really- enjoying my Ethics class. It's really more of an intro to philosophy and critical thinking, and I can't believe how much it has cleared my head and made me better able to argue my points... or for that matter, realize when something I'm arguing for isn't supportable. Although I have to say I don't agree with the teacher about everything... he likes to make some broad statements that "everyone should agree with," because of basic beliefs he thinks everyone holds, but it's not quite true... I know people who hold different beliefs. Anywhooo... great class. I asked him if he had any suggested resources for my continued education on the topic, and he suggested a book called "Sophie's World" to start with. Anyone read it? He said it's very basic, but that it's a decent starting point because it describes a brief history of philosophy. Although at this point I'm not entirely sure if what I'm interested in is actually philosophy, or if it's the critical thinking portion. Is there a difference? ![]() ![]() |

I know Sophie's World! I've read it in original, as it is Norwegian
![]() The author had been commissioned to write a text book of introduction to Philosophy for University students - for the introductory course that everyone has to take before they can take any other University exams - and after writing just a few pages of a traditional textbook, he (according to what he wrote somewhere) got so bored with what he was doing that he just threw it all away, and started writing it as fiction instead. Sophie is a girl who starts getting letters from a man she doesn't know, and through the letters - and discussions with other characters in the book - she hears about the various philosophers and philosophies throughout the ages. About half-way into the book there's a rather clever plot twist, which I won't reveal unless you ask for it - but it emphasizes a theme that the author (Jostein Gaarder) covers in other of his novels for young people as well, about reality and how to assess it. It's a good read, and good fun - and gives you the basic facts as well.
