The only Mass in B minor I've got is conducted by Celibidache. It's one of those unathorized recordings that were sold during his life. I like it very much, although the sound is not good.

I was planning, anyway to buy a hystorical interpretation.

Another thing. I'm looking forward to your review on Herrewegue's Matthew
It does sound very romantic...very loud-ish. I didn't think Bach could sound like the Berlioz Requiem so much. I havent listened to it all the way through yet, mostly because I got a collection of organ music (Bach among), and these pieces by Widor are so good...
I got Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances/Isle of the dead. Ashkenazy conducting. I already owned that disc, but it was a copy, and the skipping was driving me nuts.

You'll have to wait awhile more for the Hereweghe review, because right now I don't trust Amazon implicitly. My Copland disc is lost, and Berlioz's Benvenuto Cellini has not come...and it's been more than a month for thge former, and over three weeks f0r the latter...and they failed to accept my order of Messaien, when there was plenty of money in the bank for it....

For those of you who do not listen to this genre of music i have decided to try and give a history lesson.

Johann Sebastian Bach is basically the father of classical music. there were other guys before him, but not as important. Bach also was the father of a ton of kids, five or six whom were also composers later on. his eldest son: Johannn Christian, later tutored Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart tutored Beethoven for a slight while(and Beethoven was also tutored by Antonio Salieri, the supposed rival and murderer of Mozart-but the chances of his bieng murdered by salieri are slight- Salieri also tutored Franz Schubert.
Hector Berlioz. this guy is french and was his music was persecuted in his home city of paris in his best years. he also was a part time friend/rival of Richard Wagner. however, Berlioz was an influence on the "great five" of Russia who were the fathers of music in Russia.
John Cage. this guy decided that piano music should be written through some complicated mathematical method of his. not many followed his footsteps.
Igor Stravinsky. this guy decided that all classical music should sound superflous monotonous and boring. many did follow his footsteps, thats why no modern classical music composer to date is good or famous.
i hope my history lesson has been helpful and fun. there is a ton more interesting history to give if any body wants to know.
i hope there is a lot of classical music fans out there that are willing to discuss this subject.
I wonder why I didnt like Stravinsky....wow, I was naive to the max.

Hector, the word miserere reminded me of something. Have you come across Gloria by Miskinis, or some similar name? It was something I sung recently and haven't been able to find.

I know of a few Glorias...Poulenc's, Bach's, Vivaldi's, but I don't think I know the name Miskinis.

New additions:

Strauss: Oboe Concerto (filled with Satie, Francaix, and Ibert)
Mozart:Sinfonia Concertante, and Concertone

Also got back my Berlioz L'Enfance, and Messe Solenelle from my godparents who borrowed (they didn't like it either), for a year!

Now if only S would give back my Mahler's fourth and Bach harpsichord concertos......

How exciting. Who's the oboist?

We saw the Philadelphia Orchestra perform that last winter with Richard Woodhams (their principal oboist). It was actually commissioned by John de Lancie, Philly Orch. oboist for a really really long time a few decades ago (and one of the best oboists every in the U.S). He had met Strauss during the war I believe.

Well, it seems you already know the oboist is then, for it is the same John de Lancie.
Yes, he mentioned to Strauss all the oboe parts in Don Quixote, Don Juan, Sinfonia domestica, and asked Strauss if he'd ever write an oboe concerto.

It was very lovely, the whole piece.

Once upon a time, some orchestra was doing a recording of Tschaikovsky's 1812 Overture. One of the trombone players thought it would be cool to add his own fireworks tothe cannon-fire. He put it in the mute of his trombone, and then fired it when the cannon fire began...
When he woke up in the hospital, he said that it would have worked had he not forgotten a very important law of Isaac Newton: "For every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction."

That's what they said on KUSC yesterday. They told it a little better, but that's what they said.

Didn't something happen the first time they played that piece? Something seems to stick in my memory...

Is a guy names Tim Page the "main guy" on that kusc program?

And Curu, I do remember something about the first performance of the 1812 overture...
If you look close, every recording of the 1812 overture warns you, in the booklet, not to turn the volume up to loud or use big amplifiers.

Yes, I noticed that! It said "Warning: Fake Cannon Fire." Or something like that. Um...Tim Page...Doesn't ring a bell, but I could check. I don't know these afternoon hosts very well.

Well, I think I got a deal yesterday. I bought a used disc of Brahms' and Stravinksy's Violin concertos, Hilary Hahn as violinist. Behold, when I took the plastic off, the original plastic was on too: it was un opened.
Well, the first track is messed up, but still....

I listened to Bach's b minor mass, and it was stupendous
