OK, I'm back! I've had a bit of rest, some lunch, and some hot tea by my side - and I'm ready to jump back into this thread!
Quote:
It's like saying, "I knew John Smith when I was younger, and I have great memories of him, and he really influenced me because he was really wise and good. I'd like to have him influence my life now, but I don't communicate with him at all, even tho I could at any time, and I just don't understand why he's not influencing my life anymore!" Nurvs - if you really - REALLY - want to have your life touched in a powerful and great way by God, then it's up to you! Until we can see Him face to face, we need to read His word (consider it a love letter to you ) and pray. If you don't communicate with someone, they won't touch your life at all. My daughter hasn't touched your life, right? That's because you haven't ever talked with her. If you DO decide to get a Bible and read it, then just ask God to speak to you thru its pages. He will. And pray! which is just talking with God - be totally honest, like "God, what a crummy day today! I'm so frustrated because I lost my temper again! Please help me to have more patience and understanding with that person!" Anyway, again, it's totally up to you. As that verse in Revelation says, Jesus is standing at the door of your heart and knocking. IF you let Him in - IF - then He will be with you in a very real and transforming way.

Thanks, Elfhelm Thankfully, she doesn't have a bad case - it only flares up twice a year or so, but today, ANYONE would have trouble breathing! The avocados are blowing off the tree! We're happily inside now, and she's playing Gamecube with her brother.

brownie, I see you're on now - I've had trouble getting on lately, too, and I have in-laws descending on the house in two days for the holidays, who will prob. stay until next week - do you want to take a Christmas break (since many of us celebrate Christmas) and start up again next year?

Btw: I love that quote by nietzsche! Didja ever manage to track down the quote in its entirety? He must've had one awesome sense of humour.

System Shock 1 or 2? I find SS2 to be quite enjoyable, although it's got some serious mechanical flaws (such as the annoying lack of game balance), but the game was fun and had a good atmosphere. I'm not as familiar with the original SS.
Incidentally, where is that quote in your sig from? It reminds me of his bit on 'Master and Slave Moralities from 'Beyond Good and Evil'. Although I remember him saying it in a less general fashion - that "Morality in europe today is herd animal morality", which is merely one sort (and a lower sort) of morality. But then, I haven't read much of Nietzche because of issues in availability. Strangely enough, there is a great deal of his writings which agree with my own observation and understanding, although of course I ultimately draw quite different conclusions than he does.

Shannon: I can't remember off-hand where I read it - The Gay Science? - (and I may have mangled it from its original context). And I'm after the original System Shock from '95. SS2 was good, but like you say, it had some hiccups.
And it WAS quite the adventure in the finding... I'm gonna owe you lots of pants for this one, Tom.

brownie, I can ask one.
You seem to accept the world we experience as reality, but you are also aware that what you are responding to is a construct built out of selective perception in your own head. How do you know it isn't an illusion? Is it possible that one day you'll turn around and see the shapes casting the shadows on the cave wall and they won't be anything like what you thought? Could this whole life be just a big test, or a riddle, or a game? What I'm ultimately asking is, aren't people of science also making statements of faith when they talk about "the world" even though they know that their brains only get a highly distilled and infinitesimally small samping of the world, if it even exists at all? |
