Aw, that's so cute, Empress! I don't remember King's Quest. I liked Oregon Trail though, especially the hunting part.
I think all the games we played were good learning games. Odell Down Under taught about life underwater and survival and ecosystems. Lots of spelling games. I remember I actually learned a lot from my Speak and Spell too. |

How on earth does one deduce Polly from Mary!?
Is this in the same category as William - Bill? >_<

Haha... so true! I never bothered to talk to them around the campfire because they were boring... and after I learned all their stories I just kept interrupting them so I could get onto more important things... like hunting, gather plants, and those dreaded river crossings!

And Peggy from Margaret? Or did I imagine that one?

No, you got that one right Katya, lol... I had an aunt Peg who's real name was Marguerite...
Similarly, how does one get "Dick" from "Richard"?

You people have weird naming constructions...
Dutch names are logical! Adopt a Dutch name!

The whole naming business is so weird, imo. I just hate when someone tells me, "The new baby's name is Annabelle, but we're going to call her Stacy," or "Her name is Mary Katherine, but we're calling her Kate." If you want the child to be Kate, put that on the birth certificate. It's one thing is the neighborhood just refers to Junior as "Stinky" as a matter of policy. But the parents should like the name they pick.

Some of these nicknames are really cute. They make me want to either write stories or adopt kittens (or both).
Katya is a Russian nickname for Katerina by the way. And apparently Jeannie is a nickname for Jean but I got called Jean as a nickname for Jeannine. And Jeannie. Last edited by katya : 09-30-2008 at 06:57 PM. |

Cool link, Sis!
Very Dutch female names are par ex. Wilhelmina, Johanna, Grietje, Marleen, Leentje, Alberta, Katrien, Truus, Trudy, Marianne, Willeke, Liesbeth, Ellen, Vera, Anneke, Janita, Floor, etc. Some names are very similar to English names though, but our abbreviations are often a bit different: Wil, Hanna, x, Mar, Leen, Berta, Trien, x, Truus, Mar/Marrie, Wil, Lies/Beth, El, x, Anke/An, Nieta, x Take your pick I'm off to bed now though. Good night! *tackles the people in sight* EDIT: Sis, here it is normal to put names like that on the birth certificate and call them differently. Like Anastacia Elisabeth gets contracted to Anabeth. Or Maria Johanna to Marianne. In fact, on most official documents you are asked to fill in your official names and the name by which you are called. It's the same for me. I have 2 official names and 1 calling name. EDIT 2: Sane, congrats! What sort of bird is it? And what did you name him/her? Can I pet him/her?

Rosenbird is intrigued with her. She is much smaller than him, and he has only ever met birds bigger than he is. He isn't sure what to do with himself. It's cute.
