I got Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances/Isle of the dead. Ashkenazy conducting. I already owned that disc, but it was a copy, and the skipping was driving me nuts. You'll have to wait awhile more for the Hereweghe review, because right now I don't trust Amazon implicitly. My Copland disc is lost, and Berlioz's Benvenuto Cellini has not come...and it's been more than a month for thge former, and over three weeks f0r the latter...and they failed to accept my order of Messaien, when there was plenty of money in the bank for it....

Where the heck is Chrys? He hasn't been on the Moot in quite awhile. Is there something I missed?

I don't know! He came back a few days ago, supposedly for good, and hasn't been heard from since.

Hector, the word miserere reminded me of something. Have you come across Gloria by Miskinis, or some similar name? It was something I sung recently and haven't been able to find.

We saw the Philadelphia Orchestra perform that last winter with Richard Woodhams (their principal oboist). It was actually commissioned by John de Lancie, Philly Orch. oboist for a really really long time a few decades ago (and one of the best oboists every in the U.S). He had met Strauss during the war I believe.

Well, it seems you already know the oboist is then, for it is the same John de Lancie.
Yes, he mentioned to Strauss all the oboe parts in Don Quixote, Don Juan, Sinfonia domestica, and asked Strauss if he'd ever write an oboe concerto. It was very lovely, the whole piece.

Once upon a time, some orchestra was doing a recording of Tschaikovsky's 1812 Overture. One of the trombone players thought it would be cool to add his own fireworks tothe cannon-fire. He put it in the mute of his trombone, and then fired it when the cannon fire began...
When he woke up in the hospital, he said that it would have worked had he not forgotten a very important law of Isaac Newton: "For every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction."

That's what they said on KUSC yesterday. They told it a little better, but that's what they said.

Didn't something happen the first time they played that piece? Something seems to stick in my memory...

And Curu, I do remember something about the first performance of the 1812 overture... If you look close, every recording of the 1812 overture warns you, in the booklet, not to turn the volume up to loud or use big amplifiers.

Well, I think I got a deal yesterday. I bought a used disc of Brahms' and Stravinksy's Violin concertos, Hilary Hahn as violinist. Behold, when I took the plastic off, the original plastic was on too: it was un opened.
Well, the first track is messed up, but still.... I listened to Bach's b minor mass, and it was stupendous
