Good GRIEF!!!!! That is absolutely un-human. I can't even think of a real word for it . It is literally not something you expect a human to be able to do. Awesomeness.

I know, her ease of her coloratura, the control she shows over her voice are just amazing.

But, more importantly, the beauty of the final product is something which verges on the transcendent.

Marie Nicole Lemieux has a new Vivaldi CD coming out! I can't find any info on it, but hey, Lemieux + Vivaldi is enough to make me want it.

And Jaroussky is doing JC Bach, too, apparently. Okay, Jaroussky Bach, Lemieux Vivaldi, Genaux Vivaldi. Gods, how is one to make a choice?!?!

Non-Handelian early music seems big right now. Also a Porpora CD from Karina Gauvin, and of course Ceci's Sacrificium. Sandrine Piau, however, is staying true to Il Caro Sassone, it seems.

There are just no words to describe how incredible this is:

Renee Fleming singing Song to the Moon. You know I'm not always a big Fleming fan, but this is by a mile and a half the best I've ever heard.

It deserves better speakers than what I've got on my laptop ...

The final part of it was just amazing.

Isn't it incredible? I get chills every time I listen to those last few phrases. It's just so moving.

It's also worth mentioning that her opening bow is practically a work of art. I've watched it over and over trying to figure out exactly what she's doing, and it's basically just a really, really smooth way of doing all of the stuff they taught us at the acting camp about using your point of focus and changing it several times while introducing yourself. It's very worth studying.

She walks out, stops with her body facing center BUT she's looking up towards her right. She lets her gaze drop to a mid-point right near the middle, she exhales exactly as she drops her gaze and bows slightly, then comes up with her gaze focused to the left and gives a tiny, gracious nod as she finally turns her gaze fully forwards.

Does anyone have Jaroussky's new JC Bach CD? *looking at Tessar* If so, any thoughts on it? Good music?

Hi HB!

Some time ago I saw a documentary by Dr Barbara W Freed called Matisse and the nun.

It was about Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence (Chapel of the Rosary), often referred to as the Matisse Chapel or the Vence Chapel, is a small chapel built for Dominican nuns in the town of Vence on the French Riviera.[1] It was built and decorated between 1949 and 1951 under a plan proposed by Henri Matisse.[2] It houses a number of Matisse originals and was regarded by Matisse himself as his "masterpiece." While the simple white exterior has drawn mixed reviews from casual observers, many regard it as one of the great religious structures of the 20th century.

In this documentary a dominican nun tells of her longtime friendship with Matisse.

Now, in the program there was played the most beautiful music and, furthermore, in the end credits the music was listed and that there was a CD called La Musique de Matisse. Presumably containing the pieces played in the documentary.

Could you do me a favour and check if it is possible to get hold of this CD or if Dr Freed can be mailed and then ask her how she got hold of the music.

Most obliged if it was possible.

Best Gw

GW,

I'll have to do a bit of investigating, but I'll see what I can do :-).

I like this guy. Nice, warm mezzo-soprano countertenor voice.

I remember I was flattened when I first heard him. I was like, "My God, this isn't a countertenor, this is a mezzo!" Crazy.

I have to say, though, that I think tending to sound so very like a mezzo is a bit of a detriment, simply because a countertenor, no matter how good (and don't get me wrong, he's good!) cannot do a mezzo as well as a mezzo.

Not quite as good a singer, but a similar mezzo-sound, from this fellow.

See, now here we're just going to have to agree to disagree. I don't find that female mezzo voice brings anything 'better' to a role than what a counter-tenor mezzo brings. I think they are both beautiful, while admittedly different qualities, and I would disagree very much with someone saying that a male or female is a superior 'mezzo' sound.

I don't mean the sound. He's got a great sound. I mean the way they sing. In my experience, the great majority of countertenors tend to sound a bit more awkward or strained in coloratura passages than mezzos generally do (the great exception being, of course, Il Jaroussky).

I think that may be a technique thing. I belive a lot of singers have some pretty glaring technical flaws and counter tenors are no exception. It's also easier to hear poor technique in a CT voice because it's such an exposed sound. I do understand your meaning better now
