I fiiiinally got around to listening to the entirety of La Boheme and OH what I've been missing

. I heard the version with Jusse Bjorling [sp] as Rudolfo (of whom I'm not particularly a fan... I think his voice lacks power and 'ring', but I don't really -dislike- it either), and Victoria Angeles, who I love, as Mimi (although I haven't heard a lot of her recordings, everything I -have- heard is sublime), and then Robert Merrill as Marcello and he was -fantastic-.

I totally cried during the final act. It was just so moving when you hear the whole thing all together instead of snippets. I followed along with the libretto and with a music score I borrowed from the school library, and I was just sniffling and tearing up at the end when Mimi dies.

I knew it was going to happen, of course, but... it was just beautiful.

Tonight I'm going to listen to part of the recording with Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna, and I'll probably finish it tomorrow.

I'm going to order the one with Placido Domingo, Monserat Caballe, and Robert Merrill off of Amazon because La Boheme was already my favorite opera due to having some of my favorite arias and duets, and now that I've heard the entire thing I HAVE to have it when it's got three of my favorite singers.

I think next week I'm going to pick up some recordings/the score of Manon from the school library.

I realized that I know tons of arias/duets from tons of operas, and I know the plots, but I've only heard all of two operas. O_o One of those being Magic Flute, and that was only because I sang chorus on it last year! So I need to buckle down and listen to the ones that I 'know' then expand from there.

Yeah, it's astounding how easy it is to do that. I've only actually heard/seen all of about eight operas, though I know way more music than that. Just all these aria compilations make it so easy!

LOL I just heard the worst recording of Le Sacre du Printemps that I would've thought possible. It might have been the CD, or the original recording, or both. But the fact remains: it sounded like someone trying to play an ocarina in a hurricaine with pressurized swamp gas.

Well, I feel like a retard.

I got some copies from the library of Puccini's Manon, and I've been enjoying them

. But I was really puzzled that I never heard one of my favorite tenor arias, En Fermant Les Yeux. I knew it was from Manon, and so I double checked the libretto. No sign of it.

I was walking to the computer lab, intending to look it up, when I suddenly realized that En Fermant Les Yeux sounds nothing like a Puccini aria... so I got to the lab, looked it up, and sure enough realized that it's from Massenet's Manon.

I don't know why I thought it was from Puccini's.

Well, now I know

. I'll be listening to the Massenet Manon next week.

Puccini's Manon Lescaut is a much heavier style of music and singing from Massenet's Manon. Even the soprano lead in each production is very different - Puccini's calls for a heavy lyric-to-dramatic type of soprano, while Massenet's calls for a light lyric. That said, i prefer Massenet's, but i'm biased.

Know what's really funny though? My favorite version of that Massenet aria is sung by Fredrick Wunderlich, in German.

A French aria in German. But it's my favorite because I adore Wunderlich's voice... I can't think of a thing I've heard in his voice that I didn't love.
