Yikes, that's some concussion! Poor kid, I hope she'll be better and remembering all her math and months soon. But shouldn't the school have checked for fractures from the start?

I once (accidentally! honest!) gave my sister a concussion when we were playing. She had headaches and minor concentration problems for months but no memory loss, she remembered very well why she was angry at me for at the time!

The diet sounds difficult, I know some larger supermarkets often have an aisle specialised diet foods like salt-free. But two weeks is indeed long and once you start to take notice, salt is indeed just in everything. Any results of the thyroids test yet?

As for the city, we'll try official procedures first. Contacting the media probably isn't going to do us that much good. For one, the public opinion lately has been slanted against people who hold up public projects if the projects mean loss of property or benefits for them. "Progress shouldn't be halted by malcontents" seems the prevailing mood. And in this case, nobody really loses out but us. The neighbourhood in question is a bit run down, so probably most people will support the project. The city has the right to seize buildings for projects of public interest, but luckily there are protest and complaint procedures.

I just wish people would stop demanding things for us for a while and pretending we should be happy they take it off our hands.

*sigh* Dog puke = gross.

I'm starting a new job tomorrow, but I'm pretty nervous. Does it always feel like you're selling your soul when you start a new full-time job not knowing about anything like schedules, or expectations or anything?

Yes. You'll still feel like that 1 month in, but you'll be starting to get used to it at that point.
Good luck with the new job!

She's really tough and didn't complain about pain, and it wasn't a batted ball, either - it was thrown. It's really freaky that it did so much damage!

She's continuing to get better, and she has this week off (and rest and quiet is what helps concussions) so I'm feeling better about it now. I think there will be things that are just lost, but now she's able to re-learn things.

Good luck with the new job, Midge!!!

Whew. Thanks for the good luck wishes. I hope it gets better. I'm all haggard and tired.

I'm glad your daughter is getting better, Rian! I once had a thrown baseball loosen a couple of my teeth, but it had a glove between it and my face.

I am not happy: I got billed for sewerage taxes on an address I've only lived it for 1 month of the entire billing period. Furthermore, the owner of the house said he would take care of it. Obviously he hasn't. So now I have to fix things again.
Of course I have no minutes left in my phone contract, so I can't ring them till the 6th of next month. *sigh*

Yikes. *joins the glad-to-not-be-on-facebook-team*

Technology and social media is all very nice, but the moment it starts to broadcast things you're not even aware you were broadcasting, it goes straight past awkward and into the creepy-zone.

It's not just facebook either. I've heard more than one warning concerning apps on smartphones because how some of the terms of use are written, you can end up granting the app and their maker quite a bit of access to your data and device without realising.

True. Also, some apps tend to ask for more access than they need. If they need more than the most basic access, I don't install them. Hence, I have almost no games on my mobile, no 'useful' locating devices, search engines, Angry Birds or whatever.
Wordfeud, which is a hype here in Dutchland, also needs too much access if you ask me.

I've heard that smartphone cameras encode the gps location on the pictures, so if you post a pic of yourself and say it's "at home" on Facebook, people can locate your home!

Maybe... but people can also locate your home from looking up your name in the phone book, and if they can access your Facebook photos in order to find the GPS coordinates then they already know your name and can find you by more conventional means.

I feel that the only way to avoid a certain amount of unintended personal information leaks to the world at large is to be a hermit. I'm not really anymore exposed to strangers on Facebook than I am serving customers at work - and at least online I'm not required to stay sweet, and smiling, and totally their friendly neighborhood cashier regardless of how creepy, irritating, or rude the other party is being!

(Seriously. I need out of retail. )

I hear ya there! Retails sucks... I have to go to work in an hour and I'm desperately hoping someone comes by to break my foot or something so I don't have to go! How sad...

Reminds me of my youth, when I was sharing a house with some people and was woken one morning by somebody slamming a car door over and over. Irritated, I stumbled down the stairs to find one of my roommates (who, yes, worked in retail) repeatedly trying to slam her hand in her car door.

She'd used up every other excuse for calling in absent, but couldn't get the nerve up and kept pulling her hand out at the last moment.

Being a first aid attendant at the time, I dug out my trusty kit and wrapped up her hand well enough that she could use it as an excuse

One of the things that I've always taught my kids is to be kind to people who are "serving" them (restaurant, store, etc.) - I've been there, and it really takes SO little on the part of a customer to make a server feel better. I tell them to see if you can make the person smile, and you usually can. It's amazing how much power we have for good, often at so little cost.
