I'll be obscure:

I'm no vertebrate - I'm squishy
But I am rather tough
As was illustrated by my part
In the fulfillment of a prophecy.

Note: I'm loth to put "prophecy" there. You could substitute it for "spell" or "hint or clue" as well, I suppose.

Not what I was thinking.

I guess I could see how that would fit, but I was hoping the word "vertebrate" would suggest life. Like.. it's an alive thing.

The only invertebrates in the story, IIRC, are the Watcher-in-the-Water and Shelob
Which one?

Oh.. no, there are several others. And you're on the wrong track. It's not a villain. Just an invertebrate. This is harder than I thought... Huh.

Now what on earth kind of prophecy or spell or hint/clue would they fulfill?

And I thought this one would be really easy! Maybe you just need to practice a bit more!

Hey! Come on, peeps! Keep guessing! *bump*

"Head of the chief table"
Standing tall,
Then fallen low,
Now gold and bright.

For the first one: a snail? (if you don't know at all what I'm talking about, don't care. I just have a funny memory of The Hobbit including a snail. )

And...haven't the foggiest of the other. Eye of Sauron? XD

YES! The snail is right! The thrush knocked a snail against the rock on Durin's Day, which made Bilbo realize that was what the runes meant, and thusly they opened the little side-door.

Your other guess is very far from the answer.

If possible, I think this answer may be even farther away than NEL's, in time especially.

Yay! Good guessing! Post some riddles, peeps!

*bump* No Christmas guesses for my super cool riddle?

Quote:
"Head of the chief table"
Standing tall,
Then fallen low,
Now gold and bright.
Hint: It's talking about two different things which are technically the same thing.

The head of the king's statue at the crossroads, that was knocked off by orcs but that ended up crowned with flowers on the ground?

Not what I was thinking of, but a very good idea! The first line is a direct quote from the book, hence the "" around it. That doesn't fit the two different things clue either.

Yeah! The Party Tree, which stood at the head of the table (that was the quote, you remember), then it was chopped down, then a Mallorn grew in its place.

What on Middle-earth! How my wild guesses can be right? Twice! ...Perhaps for the same reason I tend to look at the clock when it's like 11:11, 12:34 21:12, and so on. It just happens to me. A funny little fact.

Yes - hard to make. I fear this one may be easy to answer:

My older son died with me, at my side,
My younger said he'd stay home, but lied.
He rode to battle disguised, and died.
Leaving only my daughter, a northern man's bride.
