I love history. *sigh* If I could get a job in a museum... we have many museums in my city, but the students from History-departement do their internships there usually. Not much chance for others.
Well, good luck with saving up money and trying to get the job. *thumbs up* *sits back in a chair* Ahh~. Weekend! Tomorrow we're going out college hunting again. Only this time I will participate as well, 'cause I might have to give up on Switzerland.

Thanks, I'll need it. So many things I like! Sometimes being a generalist sucks.

Yeah, I've been pretty much told that with Japanese as specialism you can't do anything, besides becoming a scholar on Japanese stuff that is... >_<
Though I most certainly do not regret studying Japanese, I am starting to regret not thinking of the careerpossibilities more. Still, my career counselor said I still have some options, but I will probably have to study for 2 to 3 more years doing something completely new.

Yuck. Why not look at, like professorship of some kind in Japanese studies?

They did ask me to do that actually because my specialism (Russo-Japanese War) is very rare. It would be fun for five years perhaps and it would give me reason to study Russian while getting funded, but after five years I would get bored. Not enough contact with other people and a lot of pressure to produce a certain amount of research per year, teach a certain amount of hours a year AND it would take a long time before I actually get to be a professor... Researching is fun, but not as a job. Not for me anyway.

For me it is, but it is a different kind of research. Animal behavior is more dynamic than history (in that it is interactive and tangible, whereas only history's effects are). That's not knocking on history, it's just two different things.

Yeah, I guess it is different. I also think that there are more scholars in your field then in mine so that makes it easier to discuss things or organize debates etc.
I do look at all historic perspectives (political, economincal, sociological, etc.) from that period, but it is only a 10 to 15 year period (if I really stretch it the war itself was in 1904-05), so there aren't many scholars in this field. Plus many people do not consider it an important period or war (which is so not true, it had world impact!) so... Try getting funding for that. EDIT: Oops, too much info maybe. Well, just ignore it then. Should you be interested, you know where to find me.

I can see why it would be overlooked. It is what could be termed as over-specialized. You're locked in on a very specific peice of a field. Not that that is a bad thing, it is just really confining, but I see what you mean.

Wait a minute, Russia and Japan were at war!? When was this!?
That is almost as shocking as this calculation I made... The USA has a 9.2 trillion dollar debt. It's such a vast number I have difficulty imagining it. I imagine that George "the internets" Bush has a hard time with this number too. I will translate the debt into a more tangible currency: high-end Italian sports cars. $9'243'570'775'885.91 could be used to buy 28'010'820 Lamborghini Murciélagos. That's over 28 million of these incredible machines, which cost $330'000 US. The Murciélago is 4.58m in length. If valets carefully parked the cars with only 42 cm separating each one, they would form a line 168'065 km in length. That's 104'431 miles. The distance between Seattle, WA and Miami, FL is about 3300 miles. With the amount of money in the US national debt, you could buy enough Lamborghini Murciélagos to park, in an unbroken line, from Seattle to Miami 31 times. Now that 9.2 trillion seems a little more real to me, I officially declare George W. Bush the worst President of the United States ever.

Wow Nurv! That's some calculating there! Made me wonder how much the Netherlands are in debt.
Oh, and yeah, they were at war 2 times actually, in 1904-05 and in WWII allthough the last one wasn't really a war perhaps, depending on how you define war. EDIT: our tiny country has a public debt of 219 billion Euro... a nice list o_O

I love watching my little fish tank...it's so soothing. I have a yellowhead jawfish in it:
I love him! He's so fun to just watch.
