Yes, you should have it! Lots of recommended versions out there. Try some samples at Amazon of these five versions, and see which you like. For me, I would judge on "Ev'ry valley."

That's a really great version, cast in the MOR mould. Wonderful singers, I think you'll find. Some other conductors to investigate in "Messiah": Gardiner, Jacobs, and Pinnock (all HIP).

I've heard some people describe Jacobs' version as "prissy"...how does he compare to those others you refer to?

Well, there's enough opinions to go around, really. Nothing wrong with his version per se, it's just that there are a lot of other options, and maybe his style doesn't get the very best out of a very English work. Personally, I'd go for an English conductor. Higginbottom on Naxos is also supposed to be very good, though I've only sampled it. Paul McCreesh's version is the one I listen to the most, but that one seems to be generally derided. Like I said: enough opinions to go around on the most famous choral work ever

But really: it's not science. Whether you get Gardiner, Pinnock, or Marriner, you're still going to enjoy the music. Just get one, and fast!

Has anyone consulted my epic post of Berlioz music on YouTube?

I've finally gone out further than Sibelius and Handel (though still going back to them). Listened to Bach, Berlioz, and Ravel recently. What a terrible composer Ravel is for the car! I love his ballet "Daphnis et Chloe," but Lord knows how many extreme dynamic changes there are in there...one second everything is too loud for the car, the next moment you can't hear anything at all. I'm sticking with Handel and Bach for the car

Two favorites, there. I love the Toccata and Fugue. There's also another Toccata and Fugue in D minor, nicknamed the "Dorian." You might look that one up as well.

Pergolesi! I've got a friend who really likes Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, but he doesn't like baroque style much; the version he fell in love with is a very Romantic interpretation, with big orchestra, and the singing done by a big boy's choir, rather than soloists. Any ideas what recording I should recommend for him? Probably best to avoid anything with a countertenor as well, as they kinda weird him out.

My own favorite was at #15. But hey, it wasn't the list of GREATEST symphonies. It was most popular. If it makes you feel an better, Dvorak famous said "Mozart is sweet sunshine." He meant that as a compliment, of course

I like the list. It's very unique. I see a lot of these kinds of lists around, and they usually follow the same format.

PS: Brahms and Sibelius were the only composers whose whole symphony cycles were represented. Mendelssohn, Beethoven, and Mahler lacked only one to be wholley represented.

No JS Bach or Handel symphonies, though. I wonder why

PPS: Mozart's 40th was one of my earliest favorites. That dramatic first movement really intrigued me (and still does). My favorite of his now is No.38 "Prague." That one, unfortunately, didn't make the list.
