I remember my granddad often telling me of how they watched and caught pike in nearby clear-water pools when he and his friends were little. Darn water pollution.

indeed. :/ some of the waters here are pretty clean still, but not in the helsinki-area..
iita, the research boat at lammi biological station afraid i don't know the species of this polyporus.. i was lying down on the pier to take photos of the ice, that's the explanation for this angle..

I'm sorry about the number of photos this time, but I just got back from one forest (doing fieldwork with owls for a day) and tomorrow morning I'm leaving for another (learning how to build things out of logs..). So I won't be here for four days, and when I come back there'll be more photos - so I hope you excuse me this time.
So these are from today's field work with the ural owl, Strix uralensis. The females are measured, weighed and a blood sample is taken. Their eggs are measured and counted. These populations (in central - southern Finland) have been monitored for 20-30 years. They look very sympathetic, but their claws.. .. look like this. And if you're not careful, they'll use them. Every year, a few nesting, unringed (is that the right word? X) females are found, after which they are ringed. A couple of feather photos.. This is one of the nesting females, a very symmetric one in good shape: 5 eggs and a lot of weight (they weigh around 1 kg). The females have these feathers around their eyes, and close their eyes when they feed their young - just to make sure the eyes aren't hurt by the hungry chicks. Soon to be released. And I'll end with this photo, that somehow represents how we felt for a while.. It was raining the whole day.

That's spectacular, Nerd, even compared to your usual awe-inspiring standards.

Wow, I managed to keep the number of flower pics down in this very small selection! I even managed to keep out all the pretty rocks and stones! *is very impressed with her selective abilities*

Oh I don't mind pictures of pretty flowers and rocks, knowing I photograph more than my share of them.
Nice pictures! (Even the ones that didn't get selected. I have a soft spot for ruins... )

Thanks! But I thought it'd be better to give just a general idea of what I saw in Turkey here, then to show all the pictures that I like best. I wouldn't want to bombard this thread with all of the pictures I took (I especially like the series of pictures I took of the sea playing with the rocks, but since that isn't specifically Turkey, I left it out as well)
I reserved Facebook for the bombarding Do you have your pictures online somewhere? I'd like to see some of them You can never see too many flowers and rocks!

I've got a handful up at a nature photo site. I've linked to some of them earlier in this thread. But those are mainly butterflies and amphibians.

This isn't my own picture, a Norwegian friend took it in the North of Norway. He did however, give me permission to play around with it and put the image online.
When I saw the poem I felt that it fitted the picture perfectly, and since I like it very much, I thought I'd share it with you.Don't really know if this is the right thread for it though :S Translation of the poem (but it's my translation, not professional. The German version sound much prettier, much more rough and right...): The evening is my book. Its cover flaunting purpur and damast. (those are both purplish colours not sure what the translation is) I open one golden lock with cool hands, no haste. And I read the first page happy because of the familiar tone - and I read its second page and on its third page, I'm already dreaming. Rainer Maria Rilke (1897) I hope you like it.
