The questers are teams, and each quest requires the special skills of questers of each skill type.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and guess that most monsters are cannon fodder, but you, being an ancient and cunning Black Dragon, would toy with the questers, playing cat and mouse with them until you got bored, and made them permanent decorations in your treasure horde.
