Fell asleep during Aeon Flux. A great movie for insomniacs.

I saw 40-year-old Virgin recently and I can safely say it is the worst movie I have ever seen in my life. Not one single character in this crap-fest was worth watching. The premise of this movie is like something that was vomited up, and the plot is like someone assembling all the solid chunks in the resulting puke pile. Watching this movie is like getting stabbed in the eyes by a million tiny knives.

Well, that was cathartic. (I hope my language wasn't too strong.)

I saw The Terminal last night, and I really enjoyed it! The characters were compelling and interesting, and the plot was unpredictable. I never thought being stuck in an airport could be so hilarious and intriguing.

Characterisation was so good, I found people I didn't even like compelling.

<minor spoilers to follow>

You do have to employ your suspension of disbelief at the beginning, where the airport security officer decides it would be a good idea to let a man who speaks almost no English wander aimlessly about the airport. Way to care for all those who pass through JFK Airport. Nice work. (I chalked this one up to something that had to happen in order for the plot to advance.)

This is tied to the scene where two characters try to communicate with the main character (who obviously speaks almost no English) by speaking rapidly in English, using plenty of obscure legalese. No wonder you jerks make less than $19/hour.
</minor spoilers>

This one annoying scene is quickly over-ridden by the complete, unvarnished genius of Tom Hanks. This movie has vaulted him to my second-favourite actor (after Sir Anthony Hopkins).

I really loved this movie.

Wow Nurv, I thought that 40 Year Old Virgin was great.

Well, to each his own. Three of my friends liked it too. (Three others had a lukewarm to dislike reaction.)

I have so much hate for that movie. I think the characters and plot, such as it was, just struck me the wrong way.

A decent chunk of my hate for this movie was for one scene: where he gets in the car with the obviously slaughtered chick from the bar. Then he meekly lets her drive drunk almost causing a few accidents. It only stops when she actually hits a car (parked, I think.)

I don't know why this incompetent director thought drunk driving was funny. If he actually wanted to convey a serious message, a movie without a totally ridiculous cast might have been a better choice.

Before the drunk driving scene, I cared a bit about this jerk. After that scene, I profoundly hoped he would stay a virgin forever, thus keeping the gene pool free of his seed of intense stupidity.

Throughout the movie, the main character is portrayed as childlike, immensely stupid, naive, but as a good point, a kind person. He is also the epitome of nerdiness. As a nerd, I resent that.

Does the director think virgins are just old children? Doesn't the director realise there are a few things you can do between hand-holding and sex? The main character is a ridiculous charicature, which makes him very hard to watch.

This movie would have been a lot better if the reason the main character was a virgin was because he was asexual. The movie might actually have been good then, because the main character would then have been a real person who simply had not had sex. As a bonus, they would have been able to keep the one good thing about the movie: great one-liners.

Lastly, the ending.

Dear Script Writers,
Please do not do acid. It is very bad for your health. Also, please do not do acid while writing the ends of movies.
Yours,
Nurvingiel

Actually the ending was so terrible, it was almost good. So I might retract my complaint on that one. Maybe.

Flightplan. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 5, I think. It was all right plot-wise, and of course the acting was pretty well, but i found the writing and the execution of the story pretty bad. Also the characters lacked depth, save what performance could give them. (minor spoilers following) My biggest problem was the bad guy. I hate a badly-done bad guy, and this one was a doozy. the actor was all right, but it was that his character lacked complexity. It bugged me exceedingly. My second-biggest problem with it was the fact that, like Clint Eastwood films, it's a different movie at the end than it is in the beginning. You are steered quite bluntly to think one thing in the beginning and then unceremoniously steered back another way at the end. It's not subtle or artful at all. Didn't like it too much, but overall it was just an average movie; not terribly bad, but not reaching 'great' by any stretch of the imagination.

And, I forgot: The Scarlet Pimpernel. I forget who the leading actor is, but it's got a very young Jane Seymour in it. OMGollum; this is a fun movie! I'd reccommend it to anyone. It's very entertaining. Also it has a young Ian McKellen, which is interesting in it's own right.

yeah, I agree about Flightplan, Rosie.

Saw Hoodwinked - funny! A kids' movie, but one that the adults with them can enjoy, too.

A Clockwork Orange

Don't know what all the fuss is about. I suppose was would be more accurate, in which case....sure: slightly surreal, a bit of nudity here and there--perhaps a tad overwhelming for viewers at the time.

But still, meh/bah.

Haven't read the book.

That was definitely a great film . A family favorite, here.

I just reviewed AVP. And it is the run-of-the-mill, everyone-does-what-they-shouldn't, only-one-survivor, links-up-with-predator, ends-up-being-honoured-by-the-same, kind of movie.

I just saw The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy with my family.. They found it too strange, I found it really interesting and funny.. I just have a feeling I should read the book and then see it again.

Strings. I really loved it. Beautiful to watch, and that is rare. The plot is the two-sides-discover-they-are-not-that-different type, but still, doing it with wooden puppets on strings IMO is a unique thing. And showing how their life depends on the strings (obviously) - when their headstring is cut, they are dead; when they die of old age, the strings just fall quietly down from heaven; when a baby is born, the delicate little strings need to be attached to them... So beautiful.

Holes. It's not the first time I've watched it, but it bears mentioning, IMO. I love this movie, even if it's meant for a slightly younger audience.

Elizabethtown. Loved it! It really clicked with me. Good movie, although I'm sure there's lot of people out there who just wouldn't get it.

They sure do. I've bought Underworld and Blade Trinity last week.

So now my vampire movie collection contains these...

Blade, Blade II, Blade Trinity, Underworld, Dracula 2001 and Bram Stoker's Dracula (which is recorded on VHS).
