About to make a big change in my life. After 26 years in Chicago, I'm pulling up stakes - and we're going to...
Casper, Wyoming! Today I accepted a position with a firm there. My wife and three sons (now 17, 14 and 12) have lived all their lives in Chicago. I hope we're not TOO crazy. But I think we probably are at least a little!

WOW! That's a big change!! But you'll now be close to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, very cool places!
When are you moving?

Yes - also close to Denver, and to Black Hills / Mount Rushmore!
We may go in stages - but I want to get out there with my two oldest by mid/late August. School starts Sept 2 - but I want to sign them up for classes, explore a little with them, and let them learn the town on their own a little while I start work.

One of the best things we did when my husband's job moved from California to Arizona was to take 3 weeks off and do a major road trip with our trailer - all the way from California to South Dakota and back, hitting the Tetons and Yellowstone, among other places.

Just FYI - I went ahead and posted a quote in the Quote Thread.
Congrats on the move, Val. I have some in-laws who live in Wyoming (not sure how close they are to Casper - WY is a BIG state). It is very beautiful there. My favorite thing might be how blue the sky is - being at a higher altitude, you get less diffusion of the color through the atmosphere.

On a map - Casper looks like it's somewhat east of dead center. Maybe a tiny bit south. It's the second largest city in Wyoming, after Cheyenne. And both are pretty small.

Compared to Chicago. There are nearly 20 times as many people in metropolitan Chicago as in all of Wyoming. Casper and Cheyenne are big for Wyoming. Think of it as moving to Oak Park, only an Oak Park spreading over five times the area with same number of people.
It’s great you’re going to Casper: You’ll have mountains! (You don’t have those in the Windy City.) You might have to learn to ride a horse, but there are many worse things in life than learning to ride a horse. If you want, you’ll be able to go for miles with just the horse for company: You can feel like a Ranger in Eriador. Oh, yeah … there are probably lots fewer street lights. Or sidewalks outside downtown. Snow comes earlier and leaves later, and street plowing is probably rather different than in Chicago; but at least you’re not moving to Casper from Houston or Miami, so the cold won’t take you by surprise. And all your neighbors will know who you are and what you do and what you’re doing. But they’ll actually talk to you. |

Actually - our Chicago neighbors are pretty good. We have a block party every summer, and the families have really gotten to know each other. And we have lots of families - up and down the street.
I think I'll still be driving a car (or minivan, as we have now - or truck, as we'll probably have to get), instead of going horseback. I wouldn't mind learning to ride better though - and someday going on long rides by horse.

That is a change! Congrats on the new job and I hope you'll all like Casper, the friendly ghost town.

Thanks.
I think I'm moving from Annuminas to Fornost. Big city on a big lake - to a smaller city in the hills!

Hills or mountains? Personally I loved living on/in the mountains and I still miss it. Hills definitely don't have the same feel though.

Quote:
The move from Annúminas to Fornost took place after the death of Eärendur, last king of united Arnor, and the accession of his eldest son, Amlaith. I wonder if that was because of military threat from the daughter kingdoms, Rhudaur and Cardolan? Annúminas does not appear to have been a city built for defense in the way Fornost, Minas Arnor, or Minas Ithil were, for example. I don’t think Osgiliath was constructed for defense, either: they seem to me to be more like old Númenórean cities, surrounded by defensive positions, but themselves more like “home”. Have you ever considered writing about the move from Annúminas to Fornost? It must have been a heart-wrenching move for the royal family and their loyal retainers. |

Yes - I have the story all in mind. Partly inspired by a Michael Martinez article - but fleshed out some more. One of these days...

According to Dorothy L. Sayers, that is the first step in creation: The Idea

According to Aristotle, we are merely figment of imagination. The Idea.

Yes - I'm leaving the first public-sector job I've ever held (partly because Illinois is in very bad fiscal shape) and taking a private sector position with a firm there.
