Private use of fireworks is illegal where I live in Massachusetts, though it’s done. I thought it was silly: I grew up in Tennessee, where private fireworks (and firearms) are the norm. Then neighborhood kids playing with bottle rockets shot one under the eaves of my house about 17 years ago. Our home burned, along with our belongings. It took a year and a small fortune to rebuild; many things – pictures and heirlooms – are lost for good.

The differences between Tennessee and Massachusetts are population density and construction techniques. Both states have the same population, but Tennessee has three times the area, and Massachusetts’ population is concentrated along a corridor beside the sea. Tennessee builds mostly with brick; Massachusetts, mostly wood.

Is the situation in the low countries similar?

Yikes, that must have been terrible.

I'm pretty sure here fireworks are forbidden for under 18 and that's a very good thing. Kids really shouldn't play with what are essentially explosives, even if they look pretty and harmless.

Population density is pretty high in Belgium, eleven million people of a tiny speck of land. If you compare us with Germany, they have roughly 8 times as many people, but over 12 times as big an area.

We mostly build brick. But in some of the older brick houses, especially the villas dating mostly from 1930 and onward, tatch roofs are not uncommon.

It is often said over here that Flemish people 'have a brick in their stomach' because we all like to have own our own property so much that we build a lot. (Public zoning, however is not one of our strong sides. We have an effect that translates to 'ribbon habitation' where towns and population centers grow from first houses on either side of important roads and more habitations get eventually built rather organically around it. You won't find many perfectly straigth lines and angles in the zoning of our building blocks, it's all very haphazard.)

Using fireworks is forbidden in the city here in SW MO. If you live outside city limits, there are no real restrictions on fireworks. The restrictions in the city are lifted for a time during Independence day and New Year's holidays. Then you can see ppl setting off mortars in their backyards, or in the streets.

I have family who live out in the country (several acres on pastureland) so we usually go there for fireworks on 4th of July. Don't bother with them on New Year's.

In my city, there is no firewoks in the city limits. The only exception is the Independence Day fest my city has.

My, how time flies! How is your baby by the way? Probably "growing like cabbage" as we say in Dutchland?

Afternoon, all. Fireworks are legal here if there is no burn ban on, as there was this year. Tlsp, I am sorry for your loss.

Weather here is great. Am trying to get Attalus to agree to a picnic this weekend at a local state park. I am holding out BLTs with avacado as an inducement. He is resistant, insisting on pie. Drat the man.

He had his first birthday last month and just this week began really walking around. It's adorable watching him try to walk, only to end up on his backside after a few steps. I'm sure I'll miss his crawling days but I'm excited because now maybe I can start to get stuff done and he will just toddle after me, instead of crying for me to hold him all the time.

Here's a very LARGE picture of Mr. B and I at my brother's wedding (being hugged by the lucky groom, of course):

Is there really no way to edit the size of an image using CSS or other modifiers in vbCode?

Thanks. Are you still slicing things up ninja-style?

NOTE: Just in case that's completely wrong, I want you to know that that's the impression I have of you, Sane. Sort of an assassin/samurai person. Like IRL.

I'm not as slicey-dice as I used to be; injuries and years of physical neglect from expecting youth to be a magical cure all has caught up to me. Thankfully it's nothing a few modern surgeries can't cure. I'll be back to my martial arts ways soon enough.

I just noticed that this Teacup is three friggen years old, just about! What the hell happened to the days where we could go through two or three in a week? ... How is entmoot still even up? Surely it doesn't pay for itself with ad traffic any more. If ever it did... Who keeps it running, Ben?

Ben still pays the bill. He says it's extremely cheap. No advertising income I'm aware of.

The low traffic seems common to message boards of all types. People have shifted to other forms of social media.

I think it depends on the audience. My husband frequents a gun/ammo/reloading board that seems quite... hoppin'. But that could be because they think it's a lower profile than on Facebook or Twitter. Can't get attacked by the other guys for liking guns if they don't go to your site.

Hector tried to make a group for Entmoot on FB, but that ain't exactly thriving either...
I have several students who love LotR, but it's mostly because of the film and they seem more interested in reading and sharing captioned pics about LotR than the books or films itself. Same for every other fandom I've come across by the way.

Yeah, I didn't get to experience the 'Moot before the movies. I do love it here, though. I dislike having discussions on Facebook.
