Sure, easy for y'all to say. My fabulous body doesn't spring back from mistreatment the way it used to.

LOL, mine doesn't either. I'm approaching the big 3-0 and my metabolism behaves quite badly anyway. But I've earned my pudge the honest way.

I didn't see anything wrong with the first part of the story, and the ending kind of had to be how it was for the analogy to work...
I think the girl showed her parents she was responsible enough to own real pearls, and the dime store ones wouldn't last long being worn all the time.
When was the father untruthful?
Am I missing something???

Tolkienfan - Well, no, other than this - the father is cruel and manipulative. Why does he have to make the girl so upset? That's a horrible father to ask for what is worth most to her. I agree with whoever it is who said it was similar to a boyfriend who says "if you love me you'll sleep with me." That's not love. Where's the respect?

I think you're missing being 5. The necklace is only "more valuable" to adults. Children don't care. So in that way it's a really unfair trade. I could replace your dog with a more expensive one...would that make it a 'better" dog for you?

But the father didn't say, "Here, I'm worried about that necklace, I have a sturdier one." And, in fact, there's no reason to take her necklace at all. If you buy someone a present, you give it to them. You don't play games about "You can keep your car, OR you can trade it for what's in this box." He didn't even go to that amount of honesty. He just said, "I pick this for you to sacrifice, and if you don't, you don't love me."

It's just flat out twisted.

Nobody here did anything that made them worthy even of being born. Nobody here 'earned' salvation. That's the point of the NT. People had untold generations to get it right, and we didn't, and God finally sent his son to do it for us. That's what the story says.

THIS story says, "Go with the guilt. " It's appalling. If you have to twist the meaning of God's love to make an analogy work, time to scrap the analogy.

Being God is not about it, either. It's a miserable, untrue, EVIL version of love.

It's simply an analogy. God wants us to give him our earthly things that we treasure, so that he can give us something more meaningful and lasting. I dont find anything at all offensive in this.

Naughty, my friend, it's a very poor analogy. The new necklace is neither more meaningful, nor more lasting. It's just more "stuff." It's all just going to lie where moth and rust can destroy it, innit? It would be a much better analogy to trade the horse (which he'd given her) for the necklace. Then you could say "God gave us life, and requires it of us, for more lasting life."

But why people require such aids, I don't know. Portions of the Bible are very well written, and jammed with analogies, to boot.

How are the new denizens of the acquarium? And is this the one that your friend is keeping for you?

Bossy newbies.

Well, sane, if that's a happiness, I'll try to appreciate it in that sense.

I need to go plant something. Day is glorious. It always is when you were planning something that's cancelled for weather.

That may be, and I didnt say it was excellent, but it does have a good point. All God needs is our love, but he WANTS to give us something better than what we have.

People like to break down stories to make them more contemporary. Some need this to better handle the meanings in the Bible, some do not. It's just personal preference.

No, thisun's mine. I dont have anyone "keeping one for me", at the moment, unless i misspoke. There are some people for whom I have set up aquariums that have fish, though. The nassarius snails spend much of their time in the sand eating detritus and cleaning, so I dont see them all that often. The goby is out and about some of the time. Thanks for asking.

How is a hookah? Tasty? Hmn...

So this story thing... whatever. It's just a story.
EDIT: Sorry. I'd better stay out of it and let the Christians debate it.
EDIT2: Sorry, I didn't mean Christians, I meant "religious people."

Not likely Curu, unless you can use that persuasive sweet talking your namesake was fairly good at. Although, if you want to go the kinslaying route, ye'll find yourself between a rock and a hard place in a hurry.

Edit: Oh, Katt, all the puppies are spoken for, thankfully. So they went to their new homes yesterday. Heh, which means they are all within a one mile radius of us, we gave them to our good friends.

And I as too busy being mauled to take pictures. They tried to mob the camera and eat it, so I put it away.
