I have a pitbull, a labrador/rottwieler runt and I'm looking after my friend's black lab and husky. Four very big doggies. Except for the rottwieler/lab mutt. She was the runt and is the smallest of the four, but even so she breaks the scales at 67lbs.

Good morning! Or should I say good day.. my first lecture doesn't start before 2pm

Varna, I thought of a new way to understand Lommelun, in my sleep.. so it may be faulty, Lomme + Lun = Pocket + A place protected by wind, warm, comfy. Which would describe Bilbo's home, a warm, comfy pocket in the side of a hill.

Empress, you sure must like cooking! Or did someone dub you cook of the Teacup Cafe

I only like waffles if the are homemade, none of that lego my ego nonsense
I'm just having myself a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios. Oh I love not having to be in school right now! But, I would be in my Master Tutor class, and that seems to be the only class I actually enjoy...

Nauti... what HAVE you been doing? Are you feeling okay? *gentle tackle*

Empress, I'm not really the waffle type, but do you happen to have some of that homemade bread you mentioned?

*Takes a load of waffles onto his plate and marches merrily off*

My professor is so strange. He's good fun though. He was telling us that with the cyclical curvatures in the world's economy over time that we now faced yet another change, downwards.. . So I told him well you better be nice to us because we're going to be paying for your future pension It was a roll of the dice. Maybe he's going to punish me at the exams

Empress? *coughs gently* maybe this afternoon I'll introduce you to my bake-ovens.

Bag End isn't exactly "a comfy pocket in the hill" though.

Um.. that's exactly what it is.

I think the most memorable line Tolkien ever wrote will suffice..
"In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a Hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."

It's a pocket ("A small cavity in the earth"), in the hillside, and it's "not a nasty, dirty, wet hole..", but one of "comfort".......

Sorry, I meant "there's nothing in the English words "Bag End" that implies "cozy pocket"". "Baggins" as a word is closer to 'baggage' which would be 'piece of work, rogue'.

But this is the Norwegian translation (Bilbo Lommelun) lol that I'm talking about, not the English.

Take the Tolkien thing outside boys...
Did I sound like someone with natural authority just now? Did I? Did I? I so want to sound like that at least once in my life *sigh*

*The crystal clear voice of Mari rang out into the Cafe, displaying such natural authority that Coffeehouse and Sis whimpered in light of her aweinspiring command, choosing to silently sit down and eat waffles*

If you want to rewrite the book, fine, but that's what you're doing.

And, no.

But I have to go register voters, anyway.

But it should have been a translation of the English words, shouldn't it? And even the English words were chosen for a reason?

Is this enough to warrant a discussion in the Lord of the Rings Books forum?
Perhaps there is already a thread discussing it? (Tolkien's choice of words, I mean, not the Norwegian translation )

And to take this thread back to topic: I love waffles! With strawberry jam, please!!!

Lol well I think you're taking this a bit too seriously I mean firstly I wasn't the one who invented Lommelun, but the translator of the book, whom (as far as I've understood from Varnafinde) decided to scrap the first translation, which was Sekker (basically 'bags' in Norwegian) and opted for Lommelun instead.
I think a good translator chooses to stay true to the meanings behind the words and especially, in Tolkien's case, the various and complementary meanings that word can have.
Which Lommelun does perfectly since it describes all the things that Tolkien himself has stated that Bilbo is and Baggins means:
Lommelun: Lomme = Pocket, Lun = Comfy place protected by wind or Lun(d), a clearing in the forest (like the area where Bag End is)
Meanings:
- Lomme = pocket, as in a pick-pocketer
- Lomme = pocket, as in where Bilbo hides his ring
- Lomme = pocket, as a cavity in the hillside
- Lun = A comfy place
- Lun = A clearing in the forest
- Lommelun = A comfy pocket, aptly describing the general nature of Hobbit's homes.

So if you're going to translate at all, stay true to Tolkien's intentions, and Lommelun is a very good example of a well-translated, multimeaning word!

A clearing in the forest? A town would have to be a lot smaller than Hobbiton to be seen as merely a clearing in the forest.

I've seen people say that perhaps it wouldn't have been so bad if the translator had stuck with the original 'Sekker' after all.

I should look for what the new translator has chosen for his dialects version ...

Sekker.. I think it's untasteful. F.ex. the Norwegian word for Bag End is Lommekroken (Kroken is literally hook but the meaning is obvious). It's perfect: It's basically Pocket End, fittingly describing the outpost-ish location of Bilbo's home, and keeping the word 'Lomme' which is a good description of all the pockets of homes that Hobbiton consists of.

Anyways
