Summary of the foregoing
Having had a look through all that, there's a consistent theme: everyone thought that the book was not spoiled by seeing the film first. (Perhaps that's not too surprising since if you thought the film was rubbish you probably wouldn't go and read the book then join a forum on it.) In particular, you all thought that the landscape and overall "vision" was great.
The real argument starts over how people visualise the characters, as is evident on all the other threads. A few hardy souls claim to have two "Frodos" in their minds' eyes, but most seem to have had their concepts of the characters set by watching the film. Some thought that Galadriel was evil! Will any new reader ever be able to visualise Frodo without seeing Elijah's perpetually wet and worried expression? |
