Are you in any of those other pics?

Well, I'm strictly of the belief that a cat should only be an indoor cat if it is bred to be one. I think it's cruel, myself, to take an outdoor cat and force it to become an indoor one. But that's me. Also, a small amount of fleas is healthy for a cat. It's when they have no fleas that you should worry (it's usually a sign of an unwell cat.)

Yes, I'm in all of those other pics.

BC, my last cat died in traffic. But thanks for the concern. I'll tell my cat.

All of my cats live outside,
but that is safe where I live
no civilisation, village is 10 minutes walk etc
They wouldn't be able to hunt if they were in!!

Maybe it's just me or my crazy American culture, but fleas are discouraged over here. They carry parasites such as tapeworm (I've had to fight that with a couple of cats I've had -- it has to be treated by the vet -- not a pleasant ailment to deal with at all!!!), and a serious infestation can also lead to anemia and other illnesses. So, in my opinion, a cat without fleas is a healthier cat. My Jasper is 13 years old now and is very healthy for a geriatric cat. He has hyperthyroidism, which is common in older cats, and that has nothing to do with whether or not he has fleas.

Chrys,

Jasper still hunts toy mice and his kitty fishing pole. He also looks out the window at the birds and squirrels and finds that most entertaining!! (I call it "Kitty TV"!!! )

No, they're discouraged over here as well. Fleas should always be kept in line with shampooing, vacuuming, etc. However, SOME fleas are considered to be okay, if kept in control. It's related to the immune system or something. I can't remember, since it's been ages since I read about it. *apologetic look*

You could use Frontline to control fleas and ticks.

Our cats are outdoor cats as well, except for Smaug for obvious reasons, although we hope she'll be able to explore the outside of our house one day as well. She obviously wants to because she can stay out on the balcony for hours looking down into the garden.

The busy street behind our garden has already cost me two of my cats and has caused me much grief because of that. But nevertheless we don't think that gives us the right to deny our cats a life outside the house. You can't tell a cat that they can go in all directions outside except that one. So we've given our black cat a reflective collar so motorists can see him. We've also resorted to a curfew. We call them inside in the evening. They have to come in before they get their evening food. But the older they get the longer they want to linger outside.

They get quite a number of ticks and flees but we've got pills we have to give to the cats once a month that makes their blood unattractive to flees. It works quite well.

A question: how many times (and what) do you daily feed your cat(s)?

Adult Cat: Half can wet or 2 sachets moist or 2 handfulls dry in the evening.

Nursing Cat: Half can wet or 2 sachets moist or 2 handfulls dry in the morning and again in the evening.

Kittens (1 month-1 Year): Half can wet or 2 sachets moist in the morning, again at midday and again in the evening.

Fresh Drinking Water is always available, and they then supplement feeds with prey from barn and stables.

i've never gone to the vets with something as minor as worms,
I just make sure I do a course of Panacur 2.5 sol
every 6 months or so.

and a small amount of fleas does show that you have a healthy cat, so long as they are not sheep or dog fleas, and never let it get out of hand.

I feed Jasper half-a-tin (about 3 oz.) of canned food daily with his thyroid medication crushed up in it...otherwise he'd never let me give him the pill (I've tried it all, too...wrapping him in a towel & tipping back his head to open the mouth and pop in the pill is an excersize in futitity...his jaw is a vise...he is having none of it!) This tinned food must *must* have gravy or sauce or it will sit and congeal in his bowl until the next day. (Please, do not think for one moment that I spoil my cat...)

He also has dry kibble available all day to munch whenever he's hungry and always a big bowl of fresh water.

I used to have a cat who preferred her water fresh from the tap and we always had to leave a tiny stream running from the bathroom faucet to keep her happy. Another cat used to dip her paw into the water dish and lick the water from the paw in order to get a drink.

Every cat has his or her unique quirks, don't you think?

Well, according to him, judging by the way he yowls every time he hears my car in the driveway, I don't pay nearly enough attention to him....

I should be able to teleport from the driveway into the house to attend to him immediately!!!

Sono, I'm sorry you can't have a cat right now. Do you have any friends who have cats? Perhaps you can play with the cats if you visit your friends.

When you get older you might be able to have a cat of your own. They are really wonderful pets (but they don't ususally get along with hamsters and guinea pigs...).
